If you want to create something that is truly useful, find an efficient energy storage device (the problem with alternative energy sources often comes back to some means of storing the energy until needed).
Or else find an efficient way to desalinate water.
A good answer to either of these could make you very wealthy

How about designing a flying saucer that will permit inter-stellar travel?
Then we can find out for sure if there is life on other planets.
