What should I expect out of a guy I briefly dated last year (but bailed out) now that he just invited me out for dinner. The invitation came after I initiated contact. Is he just being nice?

Well it sounds like he is being cautious because he might have been hurt before by you bailing out. Dinner is a safe play. It is a nice gesture but don't think it is only to be nice.
If he thinks you initiated contact because you might want to hook up again, he might have other ideas for this dinner date. Or at least different ideas about what is being served for desert.

No, he probably still adores you. If you go, it might open up his doors again. So if you go, make sure you make it clear to him you just want to be friends or unless you want to have a relationship.
P.S. The guy is never nice, they always want to get in your pants!

He is just being nice to you. But there is no harm in seeing him again. Who knows, maybe this time something really exciting will come out of it.

in a way, he still might have feelings for you; but don't overlook it. yeah, he may just be nice but don't go overboard. act normal, talk about interests and just be you. maybe you'll realize something that you've never expected. good luck :0)
