Montelukast/Singlulair blocks to some extent the effect of leukotrienes which are a type of inflammatory cell. Leukotrienes are active in asthma and allergic rhinitis and montelukast is therefore approved for both of these conditions. Food allergies are mediated by a different inflammatory cascade that either does not involve leukotrienes or if leukotrienes are involved that they play a minor role so there is no theoretical basis for montelukast working in the context of food allergies and the drug has not been studied in this regard. Montelukast is virtually devoid of side effects however and I would not hesitate - and I assume that your physician would not hesitate to try it. Very often the discovery of the action of a drug is serendipitous. You have certainly piqued my curiosity so the next time I see a patient with food allergies otherwise not responsive to treatment I will give montelukast a try. All questions are good questions and the answer is often found only by trial and error.
