The more I listen to Christians and Muslims, the more I am convinced that in fact it's not a gene, but in fact a mind-crippling desease.. What's the cure?

If there is a sheep gene it didn`t come from me. I`ve put all that stuff behind me. I`ve come to understand that relationships with those you work with are just out of bounds for a shepherd. It certainly can cause some mind crippling diseases though, Scrapie for one. The cure? cold showers and metal weights attached to your dangly bits worked for me. I`m cured.
bahhhhh.............. phwoar

Actually, from a religious person's perspective, most atheists seem to be missing some inner sense that most normal people seem to be born with. Trying to explain spirituality to an atheist seems to be like trying to explain what the color blue looks like to someone born without eyes. Perhaps a part of your brain never developed, if the article in the May 7, 2001 issue of "Newsweek" about the study of "neurotheology" is accurate.
From a spiritual person's perspective, talking to an atheist is like talking to someone who is missing something (like a certain sense), or else talking to a soulless manikin or meat robot. You are all physical, and you seem to have no sense of, or care for, the spiritual.
You make noise, and you sound intelligent, but no one seems to be home on the inside. Words like "empty" and/or "blind" are used to describe you behind your back. We find these interactions frustrating as well, since we seem to be simply talking past each other.
===edit===
If you looked closely, the article was written by a Buddhist, not a Christian.
You asked for the biological basis for religion. I simply pointed out that the majority of people have an area of their brain that seems to activate whenever they are feeling "spiritual". Obviously you lack this sensation, so you do not understand why people are religious.

Biologist Richard Dawkins has hypothesized that susceptibility to religion may be an unintended side effect of a "blind acceptance of authority" gene that, in primitive times, would have been a useful trait for quickly passing on survival tips from one generation to the next....

Well, guess what: Most of the founding fathers had it and now the writings of Isaac Newton are on display in Jerusalem: one of the greatest, if not THEE greatest Scientist in the history of mankind was deeply religious. I am sooo happy to hear you are free of such a mind-crippling disease: its too damn bad you won't remain with the rest of us in the eternity so as to exercise that wonderful mind. Its your ship and only you can sail it; sail yours straight to hell if thats what you want. Bon Voyage, Captain.

making a conscious decision to no longer be a follower, but to be self- responsible, and free.
Set the intent, and the rest will follow.....
EDIT: I read the article that was mentioned below, and referenced -an interesting, and rather selective interpretation by the YA poster. As with all things, we see what we choose to see.

It's actually a behavioral pattern that most people fall into when they want to become a part of a group. It's known as group think and it does exist.

Yes, if not careful, you could sire a sheep.
According to the creationists, that's how evolution works, too.
