I've never heard of anyone that didn't like it and want to go back.
We've only been to Maui once and we loved it. It is calmer and less crowded than the big Island. If we'd had the time and more money, we would have gone there also.
The big island is more commercial we heard, so it depends on what you like to do.
It's expensive, hotels and food are expensive as well as your activities, but it sure hasn't hurt tourism there. Depending on where you are flying from, it's a long flight also.
We are hoping to go back this year after school starts and when it isn't so warm. I highly reccomend staying in the LaHaina /Kanapalli area. We were at the Sheraton awhile and also the Aston Mahana..................my favorite ...it was like a suite.
If you were with another couple you could split the cost of that 2 bedroom suite in the Aston Mahana......a kitchen, large living room, two bedrooms, washer and dryer, and big ocean front windows all around .
We went to the large aquarium, rode the helicoper over the island, went on a dinner boat ride, went to the Luau in LaHaina, went to a plantation and checked out most of the island. Dress casual.

I don't know what these people are telling you, so it would be hard to answer your question.
There is a reason Hawaii is called paradise, because it is true. Some people hate it, most love it. Whether or not you love Hawaii will in part be decided by what you think about it before you even get there. All of the islands are very different, figure out what you want to see and then pick your islands from there.
For a first timer, I would go to Maui. It's has the best mix of beauty and activities. If you choose to go to Oahu, keep in mind it's has a large modern city. You need to get out of town to see the real Hawaii there.

Hawaii is a great place to visit. I have personally been to every island and cannot wait to go back again. Just keep in mind what you want to see while you are there. If it is the active volcano definitly The Big Island. Pearl Harbor , Ohau. Just sit with your husband and discuss what both of you want to see while there. All the islands offer great opprotunities and getaways. Also get with your hotel, they can set up alot of great sight seeing adventures for you. Or just get a little crazy and rent a car and drive around just stopping in where you want. Research on the web is also great for finding out which each island has to offer you and your husband. One last thing. You can also take inter island flights for pretty reasonable prices. So you can see more than one island per planned vacation. Hope this helps!!! ALOHA

Hawaii is a tropical paradise with something for everyone. Honolulu is a bustling city, and Waikiki has amazing energy. Try having a sunset cocktail at Duke's, stroll along the beach and then back along the main drag. The people watching is incredible. The luaus at Paradise Cove and the Polynesian Cultural Center are both well worthwhile.
An island cruise is a great way to get a taste of the other islands. You reallly aren't in one location long enough to experience everything, but it's a great way to figure out where you want to come back to.
And you will likely want to come back.
As to what the people are like, a friend of mine tells a story about a man who lived by a road on the edge of a town.
People would ask him, "What are the people like here?"
The man would ask the stranger "What are they like where you came from?"
"They're mean, nasty and cruel!"
"The people here are the same way..."
Another stranger would pose his question and get the same question in return-- "What are the people like where you came from?"
"They're wonderful, friendly and generous..."
"They're the same here..."
If you decide to go, go with an open mind and prepare to experience the vacation of a lifetime.

Kauai is very beautiful and has a wide range of natural beauty. If you love nature and like outdoor activities this is the island for you. It also is very laid back, not a whole lot of night life.
We were disappointed with the Big Island after visiting Kauai. It wasn't as "tropical." It also takes longer to get around because, afterall, it is the BIG Island. Volcano National Park was interesting, but overall, unless you REALLY want to see a live volcano, Maui or Kauai are my picks.

It is the BEST place on earth. I went there for my honeymoon 6 years ago. And can't wait to go again. The only bad thing for me was that it took a very long time to get there. We went to two islands. It was great!!!!
