Unlike alcohol and tobacco, cannabis is a non-addictive relatively benign herb that is safe for most adults to use recreationally and spiritually, and that has hundreds of clinically proven uses as a treatment for various medical ailments.
Studies in just the past few years have conclusively and finally proven that SMOKING CANNABIS DOES NOT CAUSE CANCER. Even in the U.S., scientists have known about the anti-carcinogenic, anti-tumor properties of cannabis since the 1970's. However, more recent studies have concluded that specifically smoking cannabis, despite the level of tars that cannabis provides the user, lowers one's risk for lung cancer. Not only do exclusively cannabis smokers have less risk for lung cancer than tobacco smokers; studies have definitively demonstrated that cannabis smokers have LESS RISK FOR LUNG CANCER THAN NONSMOKERS.
As for the mental health risks mentioned by other posters, it has been shown that individuals with a predisposition to severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia, should not use cannabis. Likewise, minors should not use cannabis as it may speed up the onset of any undiagnosed mental health issues. However, recent studies have finally proven tha marijuana does NOT cause schizophrenia or other mental illnesses. There are people, such as schizophrenics and children, who should NOT consume cannabis. However, for most mentally healthy adults, cannabis is a perfectly safe, nonaddictive recreational and spiritual aid that conveys a great deal of health benefits.
Cannabis needs to be regulated and taxed, much like alcohol and tobacco. It needs to be kept out of the hands of those sub-populations that are not suited to consume it. Otherwise, it should be a private, individual choice as to whether an adult consumes it or not.
Finally, as to concerns that smoking anything, even cannabis, may still be somewhat problematic, smoking is NOT the only way to consume. Besides drink and food preparations, vaporization frees the desired ingredients of the cannabis, such as THC, CBD, and CBN, for intake without the unpleasant tars and what-not that most consumers would rather not have.

"Given a cigarette of comparable weight, as much as four times the amount of tar can be deposited in the lungs of marijuana smokers as in the lungs of tobacco smokers." [p. 111]
"However, a marijuana cigarette smoked recreationally typically is not packed as tightly as a tobacco cigarette, and the smokable substance is about half that in a tobacco cigarette. In addition, tobacco smokers generally smoke considerably more cigarettes per day than do marijuana smokers." [Pp. 111, 112]
"There is no conclusive evidence that marijuana causes cancer in humans, including cancers usually related to tobacco use. … More definitive evidence that habitual marijuana smoking leads or does not lead to respiratory cancer awaits the results of well-designed case control epidemiological studies." [p. 119]
Drug Category Proportion Of Users That Ever Became Dependent
Alcohol 15%

There have been studies that have shown that smoking weed does NOT cause cancer. It does contain alot of tar though. If you are worried about health risks you can buy weed that has had no chemicals added... I guess you can say it's organic marijuana.

Don't you believe some of these answers, any type of irritation to the lungs with cause cancer. "Pot" like any other smoke, by itself contains over 146 different chemicals, that's one reason it cannot be legal, they don't know for sure what some of these will cause.
Any pot head will go along with "it's O.K. to smoke pot" It's like putting a kid in a candy shop. Don't you believe for a minute that it would be O.K. for you to smoke it. It's bed for you, it can cause cancer, it is unhealthy and it's illegal.
