Antenna are like speakers for your transmitter. Without them you are not transmitting. In fact anybody who knows transmitters would say that it is more important to get a good antenna than a rig with more watts of power.
It is possible to transmit few feet without them. But using an transmitter without a antenna will eventually damage the rig.

I assume that you mean a CB radio and microphone and not some kind of a handset like a walkie talkie
Like everyone else said... yes. If you try to transmit (key up) your unit without one you may actually damage the unit as the transmitted power can not leave the unit and can fry a few circuits.
Antennas come in various shapes and sizes... easiest is a simply magnetic mount... more complex will require mounting to your car or your house to achieve a better ground plane.
So.. read up on the basic rules, find out which channels are not used except for emergencies... go get an antenna.. pick a handle and signon.
10-4?

Yes! The antenna is seriously needed because it has 2 ever so important role:
1. It captures radio-frequency signals that are then converted to electrical signals by the receiver
and
2. it takes electrical signals from the transmitter and converts them into radio-frequency signals.
I have a CB radio and i was hoping to get a simple small box and install it under my faceplate without any wires or antennas getting in the way, like you might be thinking. They do have shorter and thinner antennas you can use so that they look like regular antennas, however the shorter and smaller, the less powerful.
Hope I could help.

Yes, I believe you do need an antenna to talk to anyone. I could be wrong, but I think you much have one, but I'm pretty sure the one that's already on your truck might work.
