You don't need a dog. You may want a dog but you don't need one. It's two different things. And if you do get a dog BTW make sure you can afford one that way if it should get sick you have the money to take it to the vet.

Any dog can sleep in your bed and snuggle, but as for the adventures and protection, you'll need a larger dog. Obviously, a Chihuahua won't be able to hike in the woods and a Lab won't save you from being robbed.
The breed I absolutely suggest is the Doberman Pinscher.
Why? They are a very unique breed: they are the only breed of dog that was created to be a companion to humans. They were never used to herd sheep, retrieve ducks or track a scent. Because of this, they are focused on you and nothing else. They, in a sense, "ask" you to do something before they do it, they wait for your command. They bond to you and will give their life protecting you. They are wary around strangers, but will tolerate them as long as you tolerate them too. If they feel you're in trouble, though, they will take the situation into their hands If properly socialized as a puppy, they get along with other dogs, cats, rats and kids. Anything.
They have a short coat that barely sheds at all and needs virtually no grooming. They can tolerate the weather relatively well and have a lot of energy, but, because they are so devoted to you, they are happy sleeping on the couch all the day if you don't want to go anywhere.
Another breed I would suggest is the American Pit Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier. They are much more difficult to train, though, and they need much more attention and socializtion to make sure they will be fine in social situations. They also have a lot of energy, but they need to elease it and will do it in the backyard or in the house..they don't care. They are very sweet breeds that have gotten a bad rap and because fo that, you need to really put a lot of training time into them.

Sounds like you need a dalmatian, ours fits the description almost perfectly. They are total people dogs and I cant sit down without him jumping on my knee (he doesnt realise he is a 60lb dog now - not a puppy. They play like a puppy for there whole life. Can run all day, and they were originally bread amongst other things as a guard dog. Dont believe the bad hype either. The breed got a bad reputation thanks to a certain film increasing there popularity to the point where they were churned out in puppy mills with no thought to temperemant or upbringing. If you get one from a reputable breeder you couldnt ask for a better lifelong companion.

We have a chocolate lab who's the most loving dog we've ever had. She'll get up in bed whenever we invite her, cuddle up with us (my husband likes to use her as a body pillow), and he loves to throw the covers over her and hold her down while she squirms (she's not being abused--her tail is wagging the whole time!). Also, she'll come up and lay her muzzle on the couch, or lay her head up against my husband's chest, and just stare adoringly.

A West Highland White Terrier fits the description. Westies are fiercely loyal and demand attention. They also like a lot of activity. The one caveat is that you must be 'the top dog' and enforce the alpha dog position or the Westie will think he's in charge. I recommend a course of dog obedience for a new Westie owner and his/her dog.

Great Dane. They are big babies at heart. But won't leave much room for you to sleep.
They are really neat dogs. I don't like little dogs, they get in the way & have to be in your face & under foot.
