I am reading this online article about something dealing with the Navy and one guy interviewed said he is a Petty Officer in charge of the officers' mess and another is a Mess specialist 2nd Class. They didn't go into any details about what that meant though, so I was just wondering and trying to understand the lingo i'm reading. Thank you in advance! :)

if you have a jop rating (meaning you went to school after boot camp) then a designation is attatched to the rank. i.e
if you went to cook school then you are an MS (Mess Specialist)
If you have made your way thru the ranks and passed required tests then you might be Mess Specialist 2nd class JONES or simply Petty officer Jones or MS2 Jones
if youre new and just got out of school then you woud be Mess Specialist Seaman Recruit jones or simply MSSR jones.
each job in the navy can be identified by two letters. If you are
an electrician in the navy then youre an Electrician Mate or EM. hope this has helped. I spent some time in the navy

The petty officer in charge of the officers mess is the person in charge of the officers mess. The officers mess is the place where all officers eat except the captain of the ship. The Mess specialist 2nd class is a rank. He is an E5 in the military and works in the kitchen. Hope that helps.

The Mess is the area where personel go to eat. There is often a more exclusive area reserved for officers only and hence it is called the Officers Mess - in a nut shell, it's the area where people eat.

A Mess Specialist or a Culinary Specialist (Navy changed the name in 2004) is a food preparations guy - a cook for want of a better term.

The officers mess has two meanings:

The first is a slang term for Wardroom or the compartment on ship that the officers eat. (I think this is the one you are looking for)

The second is an informal organization of all officers on ship that all members contribute money for transfer gifts, new baby gifts and other mementos that are purchased.

A mess specialist second class is a conglomerate of a persons job and paygrade. He is a Mess Specialist (which is a glorified cook or waiter) and he is a Second Class Petty officer (E-5 paygrade) - most likely in the navy for 4-6 years.

I also attached an website explanation of paygrade.

The officer's mess is the dining area where the Officers eat. while they get served the same food as the rest of the ship, they get it served on real plates on real tables with tablecloths. the petty Offcier incharge of the Mess is just that..he is responsible for seeingt hat the captian get's his breakfast lunch and dinner on time and his coffee is strong.

a mess specialist 2nd class is an E5 cook. they are actually now called CS: Culinary Specialist. theyare ones that make the coffee strong enough for the CO and prepare the meals.

In the military you are enlisted (lower pay rank) or Officer ( higher pay rank) .
What you read is the lower guy serving food to the upper guy.
