We aren't much of wine, or champagne, drinkers so I need some help. We are on a budget and trying to keep things simple. We are having baked cod, chicken cordon bleu and roast beef au jus or pork tenderloin as our main course buffet. We expect around 100 guests, with about half of them drinking, probably more beer and mixed drinks than anything else.

I am getting a bottle of Asti champagne for the bridal party. Do I need to get something for the rest of the guests to toast with? Just family or everyone? What do you recommend that is cheap?

What kind of wines do you recommend we serve?

Thanks!

We are having an open bar too, this question is just for the toast and the wine part.

Agree with others you have to have sparling wine/Champaign for all. Cooks, Taylors, and a few others would be fine for the purposes you are using this for.

You should have a medium body Chardonnay (you might look at an australian they are good and inexpensive)

As for a red if you are only getting one probably go for a cab, again look at the australians. DA

You need to have the Asti champagne for everyone. It is not etiquette for the guests not to have the champagne too. If you have an open bar, that is fine, but on the table should be a bottle of wine and cold beer on each table.

Asti or Brut Spumanti champagne, and one cheap-o red (merlot) and one cheap-o white (chardonnay or pinot grigio). The trick is to find one with a high alochol content (like 12 or 13%) and the guests won't know the difference! You can find a high alcohol content big bottle of wine for like $6.99 per bottle! Check around liquor stores and grocery stores and comparitive shop, then bring your own cases to the reception site. Good luck and best wishes on your big day!!

If you want to go inexpensive but tasty, go for Ballatore Gran Spumante -- a little more expensive than some sparkling wines and not quite as tasty as Martini and Rossi Asti Spumante, but it gets the best of both worlds. And yes, you should have something other than water or soft drinks available for the guests to toast with.

I served Cooks sparkling wine at my first wedding. It was good. And cheap! About $4 a bottle and I bought 3 cases for the toast. Everybody swore I'd spent $35 a bottle! It's much better than Andre. It's a good mass sparkling wine.

This is a HUGE issue to the foundation of your marriage and should be clearly resolved prior to the wedding! He may very well be avoiding the real answer - and you are already guessing what that might be. You should probably confront him directly but in a loving way and give him the comfort and safe zone to respond with full honesty. You know how unhealthy and futile it is to think that you can "change" his mind or wear him down after the marriage. Good luck - the truth may be disappointing and painful but the alternative down the road would be unbearable to both of you and possible a child that might be resented.

Just get one type of white wine (pinot grigio) & one type of red (pinot noir). As for the toast, just let your guests toast with whatever they are already drinking. Lots of people don't drink champagne, so why waste the money getting enough for the toast? Congrats :)
