If you are 22 and still live at home how are we suppose to defend you being responsible?

If you are 22 it's your choice.

But your mom's decision is probably based on your past behavior etc.

Do you help take care of the cats? Help around the house? Pitch it with shopping and stuff like that? You need to show your mom with your actions, not your words, that you can take care of a dog.

And yes, dogs are a lot more work than cats. They require more time, more money, more energy etc. Make sure you are ready for that in reality.

Wanting a dog and having a dog are two completely different things.

Do you mean you live at home? If you want to be responsible and get a dog, move out on your own and you can get as many dogs as you like, as long as you can afford to properly care for them. If your mom is telling you that dogs are alot of responsibilty she is right.. I am 23 I have lived on my own for over 4 years now and I have 3 dogs and 4 cats. Dogs require far more work, dedication, training, patience, food, toys, and expensive vet care than even 4 cats... they take up all your time, they need to be trained, socialized, excercised, played with and sooo much more. In total in the last 2 years I have spent well over 2000 dollars in vet bills on my dogs. Thats not including food, toys, treats, brushes, shampoos, medicines, chews, leashes collars, harnesses etc.. So if you still live at home and dont work or have to support yourself who will support the dog?? If you work, pay rent to your parents, have a steady job and are responsible enough to care for yourself only then should you get a dog.

You need to show your mom that you are mature and responsible in every way. Make sure you are keeping your room clean. Help clean the rest of the house without being asked. Keep up with your own laundry, and maybe help with the rest of the laundry. Keep the yard picked up and mowed, and take the garbage out without being reminded. Take excellent care of your cat. If he is getting old, he needs all the love and attention you can give him now. Doing these things will show your mom that you are grown up and mature and ready to take on more responsibility.

If your mom is really worried, you can get a dog from the shelter instead. Most of these dogs are already neutered/spayed, they are a bit older which means you don't have to teach them potty training and some vaccines are already taken care of. This should take off some management at least.

If any of your friends have dogs and need a petsitter offer to do that and if you take care of the dog while your friend is gone maybe that will help. When I wanted guinea pigs, I found out everything there is to know about them and just pestered my mom with guinea pig facts until she caved. LOL!

By doing what she tells you to do when she tells you. By doing things that need to be done with out being asked and by taking care of the cats.

Maby you should start taking some responsibility w/ the cats. If you start feeding them and cleaning up their litter box, maby your mom will see that you really are responsible. I hope this helps :]
