I met a new man. His name is Martino. What is the Italian abbreviation for this name?

And, what is the Italian abbreviation for Salvatore? Is it "Sal" like in English, or something else?

Thank you!

Hi Martox!!! I'm glad you're here! :)

...Turiddu?!?!???? Oh my!!
Does it sound bad to say "Sal" for Salvatore? (To an Italian?)

And what about "Tino" for Martino?

Martino is mostly abbreviated as Mino.
Marty and also Sal are not Italian abbreviations....and Tino is rather the abbreviation of Agostino.
Salvatore is abbreviated as Totò,Tore or Salvo or, mainly in Sicily, as Turiddu. In Campania (Naples region) it's most commonly contracted into Totonno or also Salvato'.

When immigrants went through Ellis Island many with strange and hard to pronounce names were given nicknames by the authorities. Hence 'Salvatore' became 'Sam'.
