I spend a lot of time on the internet and often see people that set up accounts for charitable contributions. But... What is considered charity? I am in the process of building a home but have to pay some medical bills from an emergency surgery for my husband that wasn't covered by our insurance. Do you know of a way that I could raise funds or get these "charitable contributions" in order to pay these bills off so I can close on my house next month?

Going back to the root, the word "caritas", from which "charity" comes, means "love." That's my advice, speak with those who love you and ask them to help. You are not asking because you went out and made a mess of your life. You and your husband had to deal with a serious medical issue that set you back. Those who love you AND ARE ABLE to help will likely do so. However, do not get angry at someone who refuses to help. He/she may not be able to for a variety of reasons, and would feel doubly uncomfortable if you became angry.

charitable contributions are intended to serve the many, not the one.
There are however, many in your position, and there are programs out there to assist such. Do your research.

I think charity is helping others that need help. Not just giving less fortunate stuff.
