There has to be something that you can use to test electrical wires but i dont know what. Like the black and white wires that come straight out of the wall. I have a ceiling fan that wont turn on and I was wondering if i can buy something to test the wires with to make sure that the current is still getting to the fan. Yes, the light switch is turned on. Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks

I know that there are devices out there I was wondering what they were called?

the quick way is to grab the wires by the plastic a touch them together if it sparks you had power and now you have to reset your breaker

a better way is to buy a voltage tester. it often looks like a fat pen. it senses electromagnetic field created by electricity. if you have power the black wire should caused the tester to beep and/or light up, but not the wight one. also good for finding brunt out Christmas tree lights

the best way is to go buy a multy-meter, a small box with with a knob for selecting different test, a read out (often digital), and black and red electrodes

There are simple devices to see if there is voltage between the Black and White wires. Probably less then $10 at a hardware store.

But, if you just want to get the fan working, we would need more info. Is it a fan light combo? How many wires and what color do you have? How do you want the fan/light to opperate?

The typical connection keeps power to the fan at all times and the light will work off the switch. You then use the pull chain to control the fan. Do you have the pull chain in the correct position?

Good luck...

You should take a lamp and touch with its cables the terminals of the fan.(the ends of the cables should be without insulation)
If the lamp lights on you have the right voltage at the fan´s terminals and the problem is inside the fan.
Do it with care

Go to your local hardware store and ask to see their "circuit testers, "voltage detectors" and "voltage testers".

For a novice do-it-yourselfer, I'd recommend a "non-contact voltage detector", that lights up and/or beeps, when you hold it near a wire that has live voltage.

Circuit tester: $1.18

Non-contact voltage tester: $9.98

Yes there are test instruments out there, but if you don't know about them, then you don't know anything about electricity. LEAVE IT ALONE, YOU ARE LIABLE TO KILL YOURSELF
