Yes that is fine, but it is more appropriate to place your silverware at a 45 degree angle on your plate. This indicates to the server that you are finished.

Usually you find the table too crowded in restaurant to push your plate away w/out crowding the other diners w/you. Simply fold your napkin and place it on your plate. The server will get the hint. At home, just stop eating and wait until everyone else is through.

It makes it easy for the server to clear your area...a sure sign that you are finished. IF you leave you plate as it is, there is always guess work or questions involved. There is nothing impolite about it as long as you are not crowding anyone elses space at the table. Another way is to take your fork and knife and place them INSIDE the plate...that is a recognizable sign that you want your plate cleared. Good luck

In a restauraunt it is polite. In a private home probably not. At a fancy catered event just put your silverware across the plate and move it a little so you can rest your hands on the table if you want.

I don't care about polite. It's the right thing to do. The waiter can then take the plate without asking if you're done.

Yes, I think that you should leave your plate in front of you until the rest of the people have finished.

It's best to wait 5 minutes after eating (in a restaurant) for the plate to be removed. If they don't remove it in that time, place it to the side.

It is polite because it signals your host/hostess that you have finished your meal, but another way to let them know is to place your silverware on top of the plate, especially if you didn't finish the meal.

Yes, it's perfectly polite. It's very helpful to a server to know you're done instead of wondering if you're going to finish those last few morsels.
