A TENS machine may be a good idea. I was helped by going to for exercises in the pool with a physical therapist. I did not know that sciatica pain could go away, but mine did.

It may be helpful to have your mother lie on her back and relax while you take the heel of the leg with the pain and gently pull straight away from the hip. Do this very gently at first to make sure it doesn't aggravate the problem. It shouldn't, but it's better to be safe than sorry!

Chiropractic, cranio-sacral, osteopathic techniques may help your mother. Acupuncture can be very helpful too. Some insurance plans cover some of these treatments.

Here's a thought to share with your mother, in many instances the muscles pull the vertebrae into pressuring the nerve(s) which cause the pain. Getting the muscles to work normally will get to the root of the problem.

She would benefit from taking extra magnesium, preferably as magnesium citrate.

Sciatica is very painful. I don't think you can relieve that sort of pain without painkillers; I've been there. A warm bath helps for a little while, so do physiotherapy exercises for some people, but they can only take the edge off the pain. Better to take the pills and be able to live a little. Well done you for caring - your mum must be proud of you. Good luck to you both.

Sciatica is serious, if you have it you need to see your doctor. It could mean you have a herniated disc. But if you have it often self treatment is usually Immediately stop the activity that is causing pain, but do not become immobile. It is better to carry on with every day movement. Bed rest could actually worsen the situation. Apply ice therapy at 20-minute intervals during the acute stage of the first 24 to 48 hours after pain first occurs. Some compression can also be helpful, after 48 hours, alternate heat and ice. Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID), such as ibuprofen, to reduce pain and inflammation. Hope i helped. God Bless.

Sciatica is a pain that results from irritation of one of sciatic nerves. This is a lower back pain that goes down to hip and then to both legs extending to feet and toes in some cases. Sciatica nerve is the largest nerve in our body. Running down the spine through the hip, sciatic nerve goes down to knee and ankle. Any damage or pressure on this nerve results in debilitating sciatica pain that needs thorough investigation of probable causes on the basis of symptoms to provide relief to the patient on a permanent basis.

I recommend a gel called Ibugel Forte 10%.
The main ingridient is Ibuprofen.
You maybe able to buy this at any chemist,
if not your Doctor could prescribe it.
It does work.
