I had the same question when I got my 1999 ford explorer used. You can find it printed on a sticker on the computer, located behind the inside panel in the rear quarter driver side.....at least this is where it is located on my 1999 EB 4-door explorer.
So next to the jack "yes" behind the panel just in front of the jack.

In the left rear near the jack, but well forward of it and up some is a black module with a sticker on it. The 5 digit code on the keyless entry module is what you need. Take a flashlight, and gently pull the plastic trim panel out untill you can read the code.

You were told correctly where to look for the code, however, the dealer should have been more than willing to help locate the code for you.
Your local Ford dealership would be your best source to retrive the proper code. Should the original code tape be missing your dealership can recode the keypad with their computer equipment.

No,you have to find the original code, look in the back, on the drivers side jack panel, it's on a module back behind the reservoir..

tim S and bartzan is correct... pull the jack access door, pull back on the quarter trim and you will see either a black or white module.. on that module printed is a 5 digit code bigger than the other numbers.. this is the 5 digit code you need
and this is one that CANNOT be accessed with a scan tool....

I'm sure there is a way to reset it, contact your local Ford dealer and ask... they can porbably make it a code you want.

the fastest way is to go see your ford dealer, they can plug their IDS computer into the data link connector under the dash and tell you. this only takes about 5 minutes to do so don't let them hook you. we do it at our dealership for free, it helps to build customer relations.

it tells you where to find it in the owners manual, and maybe the previous owner wrote it in there.
