Unprepared, the Mississippi River is DANGEROUS to be approached by just anyone.

Here are some safer approaches to your question:

The USGS Education site: http://education.usgs.gov/

The Weather Channel: http://www.weather.com/

Mississippi River currents, surface floodstage elevation, surface and water temperatures all play a part in obtaining more accurate weather information pertinent to the mid-US area.

In the early part of the spring when the river as it's highest it can be fairly cold.

I can rember swimming in the river in June and it being very warm. There are large offshots of the river inside the levey that are quite shallow at times.

I don't know the exact temperature but it can be very cold as snow and ice flow down from the north. On rare occasions even signs of ice will still be scene in early spring in New Orleans before it flows into the gulf.

They call it "The Muddy Mississippi" for a reason. The surface temps stay pretty moderate (warm) all year. Due mostly to it's dark surface. At depth, (As already mentioned it can get quite deep) it is very cold in the spring.

wanna swim in it ?

...

You know there are bullsharks and alligators in the Mississippi ..bullsharks are 1 of the most aggresive sharks towards humans.. next to the tiger and great white. as for the alligators... i have no clue why they dont attack us .. tho they seem to like attack people in Florida. I've swam in the smaller rivers on the North Shore..like the Tchefuncte and bogafalya river since i was little.. they're infested with alligators.. heh and i still swim in there.. .. the rivers are packed with swimmers on the weekends ..
