1-2 tablets of Tylenol PM is the usual dose given at bedtime to help an individual get to sleep. Tylenol PM contains acetaminophen and diphenhydramine which possibly cause significant health problems however if taken accordingly in a prescribed dose, then the possible damages can be avoided.
It becomes dangerous if taken either as a large one-time ingestion or at a chronic high dose usage. That time it can be toxic to the liver and cause severe, and sometimes fatal, liver damage.
If you cannot help without 2 Tylenol PM then you may continue taking it. Drink plenty of fluids and if you are concerned about possible damages it may incur then you should have a check up once in a while for your health safety.

Well, there is bad news and bad news. Your friend has a serious drug problem although she probably doesn't realize it. Taking 20 tylenol PM to get to sleep is doing a number on her liver. She needs to see a doctor and have a liver function test performed. Sadly, this won't show anything until the liver is 90% destroyed. What's really sad is the medication that she 'needs' to get to sleep is not the tylenol. Tylenol PM has benadryl in it. That is what helps you fall asleep. You can buy Benadryl over the counter and use it without getting the liver damage from the tylenol. Your friend needs an intervention. Someone needs to sit her down and tell her what she is doing to her body and those around her. She needs to get off the Tylenol PM and eventually the bendadryl too, before she makes a mess of her life. While OTC drugs aren't as commonly abused as other drugs, your friend has a first class addiction problem and needs help.

Yikes! Tylenol is not good for the liver or kidneys! http://www.newstarget.com/001523.html
If you are taking it simply for sleep aid, I'd recommend using something without the Tylenol ingredient.
I have used Melatonin for a long time. It's a natural chemical that your brain produces in response to darkness. It's helps to makes you sleepy. Take 1 to 3 mg half an hour before bed. It has a half life of 1 hour, so you don't wake up feeling groggy. There's more info about Melatonin below.

It's possible, but that's something to ask your doctor about. Tylenol came out with "Simply Sleep" for those who were using Tylenol PM as a sleep aid but who developed a resistance to regular Tylenol for normal aches and pains. It's basically the "PM" without the "Tylenol" - you might try that.

You can safely take up to 3000-4000 mg of Acetominophen (tylenol) a day without damaging your liver. If you drink alcohol also, the threshold for liver damage goes down roughly 2-fold (about 2000-3000mg can damage your liver in combo with alcohol).
Hope that helps.

2 tylenol pm every night? Wow. Whenever I take one before bed I always feel heavy and tired the next morning.
I would try to cut back from that. I think that even an OTC drug like this can become slightly habit-forming. Did you get headaches when you quit taking it?

tylenol is actually one of the most dangerous OTC medications you can take. It is very easy to OD and is highly toxic to your liver. Ask your doctor to prescribe something like Ambien, Lunesta or Rozerem

Try to ween yourself. This product is probably not really helping anymore and the effects are now psychosomatic.
Take one and a half pills for a few weeks. Then take only one. Then take only half a pill. Eventually you will find that the pills make no difference. They really don't help you to sleep anymore. You just think they do.
