There are parts that may well be reasonably accurate and which can be verified historically. It also contains useful and fascinating words of wisdom and in the King James Version some of the most beautiful poetry - albeit translated fro the original language but rendered into wonderful English. The big question is whether or not you believe it to be divinely inspired and that is a question of faith not fact. Personally I find that there are too many anomalies and fantastic (in the true sense of the word) stories for it to be considered reliable, but that comes back to faith.

Personally I think scripture is reliable, it is how we interpret it that matters. For example there is a christian faction that believes God will cure/heal you of all your infirmities if you believe in him. Of course if you are not cured/healed that is because you didn't believe enough brother/sister. But Job believed with all his heart and yet he suffered for along time.
One also has to look at the time it was written in many cases it refers to the man being head of the family, but at that time women where less important than the cattle a man owned.
The bible does contradict itself in a few places, the creation story being the most famous, so one has to read it and do ones best to interpret what God is telling you.
Taking a small section out of context is very dangerous, you really should read both sides of an passage.

Reliable???
It says that those found to be working on the sabbath day should be stoned to death!
Genesis contradicts itself within the first 3 chapters!
And there is no historical or archaeological evidence of there ever being Jewish slaves in Egypt!
(you'd think wandering the desert for 40 years would leave some trace of civilisation!)
Or a guy called Moses anywhere outside the bible!
10 billion species on 1 boat? lol!
Oh and did "God" just negate to mention the dinosaurs or do you have an excuse for those also?

Yes even if you don't accept the spiritual viewpoint that God watches over his Word and makes sure the truth is not distorted. For all modern transaltions of the Bible we can go back to the originals in Hebrew and Greek so we know that what we read is what people at the time heard.
God bless

Scripture is not reliable. It tells us that the universe was created in 6 days, that all animals were preserved by one man and an arc, that demons can inhabit people making them sick, that people can rise from the dead, and that there is only one "right" way to live.

Yes. It is the most authenticated book ever with over 5000 original manuscripts dating 2nd and 3rd century. No other book can be as well authenticated.ie Plato, Shakespeare, etc. there are very few copies and most are completed by student notes.

Scripture is reliable when you have a reliable, authoritative source of interpretation. Obviously it is not reliable at all when you simply try to interpret it yourself. Thousands of conflicting Protestant denominations based on contradictory interpretations of Scripture clearly demonstrate the futility of that approach.

It depends on whether you believe. However, remember how the bible's books were selected and put together by by people in power, the very people that so many prophets had such distrust of.... just a thought....

the gospels aren't cos they all vary greatly. take the resurection, for example. in one, there is an earthquake, 2 fainting guards and an angel sitting on the stone, which has moved itself aside. but in another one, there's just an empty tomb and a gardener.
