So, of course, we can't write out the exact sounds animals make, even if those are universal. In English, cats say meow, dogs say woof, pigs say oink, cows say moo, roosters say cockadoodledoo... but around the world, what do they say?

Yes, I covered that in my question, hence the "pet sounds are universal". I'm talking about language representations of pet sounds. Otherwise this would be a pretty pointless question. :)

in italy roosters say "chicchiricchiiiii", cats miao (which is kinda similar to meow), dogs go bau bau, cows go mu mu (same sound of moo moo, just different spelling), pigs go oink oink, mice go squit squit, chickens say coccodè, sheeps say bee bee (the "ee" sound is similar to the EA sound in bear), horses say iiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiii (the iiiii is similar to the EE sound in deep)...hmmm I can't think of any other animal right now =)

They say different because we hear different. It's not that they speak different languages is that our hearing of certain sounds depends on the language we speak therefore it appears that they speak differently.

I was told by my German exchange student that the sound for a chicken was kick-a-kick-a which, when he said it, did sound much like the sound. Much closer than cluck cluck.
