I live way out in the country. The local law enforcement is no help. My car is really loud, so we've determined that he hears it start up and then dumps the nails out. We don't have a video camera. This has been going on for about 9 months now after we took him to court for harrassment and tresspassing. We have to drive past his house to get to our house. Help!

Revised with a few more details: I live way out in the country. The local law enforcement has been no help and is understaffed/underfunded. The sheriff actually just gave us a really big magnet. That was the extent of their help. My car has no exhaust, so its kinda loud, so we've determined that he hears it start up and then dumps the nails out - thus not getting others with the nails. (He’s not doing it because our car is loud - he’s a crazy drunk.) Not too many people go past his house besides us. We don't have a video camera. This has been going on for about 9 months now after we took him to court for harassment and trespassing. We have to drive past his house to get to our house. The road is not technically a public road. We have an easement through it - it actually goes thru the creek which makes it nearly impossible to spot any nails. Any ideas?

use a web cam - they are incredibly cheap ($50.00 will get a decent one) and can be set up almost anywhere using wireless technology.

also, every time there are a bunch of nails out there call the cops - do this every time. even the most wacked out nutbag will get the creeps by having the cops look over their handy work day after day.

if you get the cops involved, don't be surprised if they sort of stake him out - or you could hire an investigator to stake this guy out and take photos - this also probably won't be as expensive as you think.

Do a burn out in front of his house at 3am to get him really good and mad at you. The next morning when you leave, call the police department because you know that he's going to put roofing tacks out on the road, then crank up the car and drive to meet the police up the road. They'll have enough evidence to go ask him why he's putting things on the road. I believe that it's illegal to knowingly put things on the road that could cause harm to others.
Either that or drive your loud car up to his house and ask him why he has a problem with you.
Or you could get a friend to sit close to his house and take pictures of him putting the nails out when you crank your car up. Then you'd have him on film.
Still the best way would be to talk to him.

I would go to the police department and file a complaint.
Is there any way that you could set up a video camera to get him on tape setting out the nails?

What, he dumps the nails on a public road? Call the state highway dept and complain - he could be cited for public vandalism of a roadway. Keep calling them until they react.

I think you and he should talk it out--you will make your car quieter (at least around his house) and he will stop the nail trick. You should have done that, before involving the un-helpful authorities.
This must be resolved, before a major feud erupts.
