Yes, smoking is a very serious drug addiction. It's not recognized as one, but it is. The phlegm you are coughing up is the stuff you have been inhaling; tar and whatnot. You should really try to cut back on smoking and then quit, because every cigarette is 12 minutes off of your life; not 12 seconds, minutes. A really good book to read for quitting is "Hooked but not Helpless: Kicking the Nicotine Addiction" by Patricia Allison with Jack Yost, ISBN 0-9623683-3-4-51495. Oh, and to give you an idea of how bad your addiction is; every year you have been smoking about 20 a day, is 60-61 days off of your life. Sorry, but that's the truth. Good luck with quitting! (If you are going to)

Yes, it's serious. Serious as in C-A-N-C-E-R serious. I advise you to quit smoking immediately. Or at least start decreasing the amount you smoke each day.
You can't expect to go through 20 cigarettes a day without it taking a toll on your health. Go back to your doctor - you probably have smoker's cough. When you inhale tobacco smoke, the respiratory system tries to protect itself by producing mucus and coughing. Normally, the cilia (tiny hairlike structures) beat outward to sweep harmful substances out of the lungs. Smoking reduces the effectiveness of this sweeping action, so some of the toxins remain in the lungs and mucus remains in the airways. When you sleep, some cilia recover and start functioning again. On waking, you cough because your lungs are trying to get rid of the toxins from the previous day’s smoking. Eventually, after long-term exposure to tobacco smoke, the cilia stop functioning completely.
Of course, there are many other possibilities, but without a physical examination, we really can't do much for you. For your health's sake, do consult your doctor about your cough, why it's happening, and ways to help you quit. The benefits of smoking cessation are clear: only 20 minutes after a smoker’s last cigarette, blood pressure and heart rate start to return to normal. Come up with a plan together to kick your cigarette habit forever. These days, there are all sorts of things to help - nicotine patches, etc. Good luck - you'll need it.
And no, chewing tobacco/smoking a filtered cigarette/rolling your own will NOT fix things. In time, you'll develop cancer with any of them. Just keep in mind that quitting can only be good for your health, not to mention your wallet.

Hey Elmo, your friend Katy Perry is really hot. Don't you think? Can she come over to my house sometime so we can play 'house'? LOL You're spending too ******* much, that's what. They could probably buy a small car in 20 years if they didn't smoke. 50 cigs a day? That's over 3 an hour! WTH!?!?!?! Maybe they should be doing another type of drug *hint if they are that addicted to smoking? And after waking up at 11:30 am (LOL me=Vampire), I see Elmo played a trick of logic on us. He said each cigarette costs $14 (that's more than crack....hmmmm) so I'm going to use these figures: If the average price of a cigarette is $14 (Aussie $) AUD 50 x $14 x 7= $4900 AUD ............x365= $255,500 AUD ............x365 x 10= $2,555,000 AUD ............x365 x 20= $5,110,000 AUD

There's a cure - that's stop smoking.
Don't just suddenly stop, because you've been smoking for years, you're bound to start again after day 1 of quiting. Give your body time. Gradaully and gradually cut off 1 or 2 cigars at first then less and less depending on how you think you're coping. But don't give into yourself, don't think you'll just have one more today and then tomorrow less because you won't. Be hard with yourself. It won't just stop like that, it will take months before you're free of cigaretts.
Every time you feel like having that just 1 cigar, think to yourself all the things you could buy if you brought 1 less packet of cigarett. I'm sure you'll notice that you'll have more money as you stop smoking.
Just ignore the horrible comments from others. Prove them wrong.
Best Wishes,

I see that many people have told you to just stop smoking.
As if it were very easy.
You do need to quit. It will be the best thing you ever did for yourself. And you will not miss it.
I smoked 3 packs/day (60 cigarettes) for 20 years. Tryed to quit who knows how many times. Several times managed to quit for as long as 2 hours! I finally got into an 8 week program (mine was called Smoke-enders) which gave me the method & support to do it. Cigarettes are highly addictive. You need assistance. 30 years ago, my program cost me $250. The same thing today may be $1000. Its worth it to end the worry and enable you to live past 55.
Ask your doctor or the internet about programs.

Oh My God! you smoke twenty cigarettes a day, and when you cough up greyish phelm every day your asking if you should be worried!!!!!! Cigarettes have three deadly chemicals in them. Tar, that can build up in your trachea...you hav to remember tar is also used to build streets, do u really want taht stuff clogging ure trachea (breathing passage). next deadly chemical is Carbon Monoxide, that is the chemical that has a detection thing that you put in your house so that you dont inhale it and die, well your body doesnt hav a detector for Carbon Monoxide, your just inhaling this deadly gas. and the last drug in Cigarettes is nicotine, a very addictive drug, and just getting addicted to this will make you want to inhale these to other deadly chemicals...so in conclusion DONT SMOKE!

You should ask to be checked for COPD. It is a lung disease brought on by smoking. Medication in the form of different inhalers are given but no cures. I know you will get a lot of negative replies because you are a smoker but ignore. People do not seem to realize it is a drug, a disease such as alcohol and hard drugs. Not that easy to stop. Get a lung exray also. I wish you well and good health. Yes, I use to smoke and I have COPD.

It sounds like you have one of if not a number of the COPDs - Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases which are primarily caused by smoking, some estimates say 99% of smokers get these to greater or lesser extent. The doctor was possibly ill advised giving you antibiotics unless they were sure you had an infection causing Bronchitis. These diseases are nigh on irreversible as they are degenerative [sorry], however, some improvement can be had by eating healthly & exercising and.......GIVING UP SMOKING!! IT WILL ONLY MAKE YOUR CONDITION WORSE!! See reference below.
