How come our tummy (or abdominal region) is known as the stomach? The stomach is one of the smaller organs in the tummy, so how come we call the whole area the stomach?

No, no, no. I mean, why is our abdominal region (the thing that many people want to flatten) called a stomach? A stomach is an organ. The abdominal region is also know as midriff...

Tummy a child's word. Stomach is hard for children to pronounce, so they say "tummy." When a child's abdomen hurts, the most common reason is a stomach ache. A child who can barely speak cannot respond to a question like, "Is the pain in your spleen, or is it in your pancreas, or is it in your large intestine?" However, a child who can barely speak can respond to, "Does your tummy hurt?" Most normal, healthy toddlers do not experience any abdominal pain except for stomach ache and perhaps gas, and so "My tummy hurts" is sufficiently descriptive for mom to figure out what's wrong.

Then, when we we a little older, we're taught that "tummy" is actually "stomach," and so we keep on using stomach to indicate that area. It's not incorrect, either -- internally, the stomach may be a small organ high up in the abdominal region, but externally, the "stomach" is the whole area. Think about it... if you're lying down with a baby on you, you'd say "The baby is lying on my stomach" and not "The baby is lying parallel to my stomach, large intestine, and small intestine."

It was years and years ago when western medical science still believed in "humours" that needed to be balanced and prescribed things like mashed maggots and prunes in goat piss for the flux. They had no clue as to why organs were there and thus named the area for the main reason they could see. This is also why a baby was said to grow in a woman's stomach.
Besides Tummy was a word (I think and am not completely sure) that came out in the Victorian era when words like stomach were too embarrassing for people of quality to say.

Quite frankly i think you've been under the knife too many times girl, but it is your decision. I would say take the money and invest it in a personal trainer rather. That way you learn to lead a healthy lifestyle AND pass that on to your kids. Its gonna be hard work but i think its kinder to your body. Also as with any surgery, things can go horribly wrong. Good luck.

Most people know little about anatomy. When your stomach rumbles, it seems to come from your midsection. Who knows what it really looks like in there? The word itself come from the Latin stoma, meaning mouth or opening.

Online Etymology Dictionary:
stoma
"orifice, small opening in an animal body," 1684, from Mod.L., from Gk. stoma (gen. stomatos) "mouth," from PIE base *stom-en-, denoting various body parts and orifices (cf. Avestan staman- "mouth" (of a dog), Hittite shtamar "mouth," M.Bret. staffn "mouth, jawbone," Corn. stefenic "palate"). Surgical sense is attested from 1937.
