I am considering starting kickboxing because I need a workout and the self-defense. Would you recommend it?

For working out definitely. For self-defense that's a weak maybe. There are other aspects to self-defense besides stand-up fighting and the normal punching and kicking skills that you get from kick boxing. Among these are the ground fighting aspects, open handed strikes to the eyes and groin that you don't get in a kick boxing class. There are the ways of breaking simple holds like wrist grabs, cross wrist grabs, hair grabs, front and rear chokes, bear hugs, head locks that often times you can find yourself in that a martial arts class will probably give you a better understanding about and how to defend against.

Do the kick boxing class and look for a self-defense class to go with it or maybe take several months off from the kick boxing workouts and enroll in a martial arts class that has a strong self-defense aspect to it. Some martial arts studios have a kickboxing class that they offer for the cardio benefits while also offering the more traditional martial arts classes. Shop around and you may be able to find a school or program like that.

I'd recommend it, it can help you for self-defense depending on the situation, and how realistic (full contact) you spar during your training.

If you want to defend against a person with a weapon, or multiple opponents, you might want to consider something like Krav Maga.

I hope this helps

good luck!

It's fairly realistic. If you want to be decent overall, add a grappling sport, but kickboxing by itself will be helpful against many people (unless they are a decent grappler, then it may not help you do much. You need both standup and ground skill to be a complete fighter, but as long as you don't THINK you're super deadly, it's ok).

Yes I would, but kickboxing isn't exactly for "self defense".
