KORAN promises of houris in heaven:

Single-minded slaves of Allah... will be honored in the Gardens of delight, on couches facing one another; A cup from a gushing spring is brought round for them, white, delicious to the drinkers, wherein there is no headache nor are they made mad thereby. newcomer: no, i did not read each verse in context. i had in mind the bit about virgins and the command to kill unbelievers, so i did a search on the internet and all of those came up in one shot. thank you for your idea to get an authentic copy of the qu'oran. i do know that people (as evidenced here) take all sorts of things out of context in the bible to prove their "point", and that doesn't make sense either.

of course i copied and pasted (whoever insulted me for that); i do that a lot when i need a reference to back up my point; what's the point in retyping it all, or even in commenting without showing my resource?

As Layla said... look for the Tafsir...
Not all of Quran is supposed to be taken literally...
And us Shiat Muslims believe that there are two things that never ever separate... The Quran, and the Ahl Al-Bait (the Prophet's decedents)... and it was said by the prophet, to seek the knowledge of the Quran from his Ahl Al-Bait...

I didn't intend to answer this question since I am not Muslim and in fact I am not answering it but am commenting on the answers.

The context of the Old Testament verses that Brett A mentioned is a one time event. The killing was intended to purge the nation of Isreal. But there are no verses in the Bible that say we are to kill non-believers now in present day. Jesus said that we are to love our enemies and pray for those that persecute you. Not to kill infidels and renegades!

Does the church have a bloody history? Yes! I dont agree with the Crusades nor could I argue that burning heretics and witches is the right thing to do. The history of the church paints a horrible picture of Christianity. I am sure individuals have painted a bad picture of Christianity also.

However, according to the asker (because I didnt look these verses up) the Koran makes it clear that good Muslims kill unbelievers or their enemies. She wants to know how they reconcile these verses with a message of peace.

I came here to read a Muslim response and ended up including my two cents!

BrettA makes the excellent point that all "holy" books of the God of Abraham call for the death of non-believers. The God of Abraham has always loved a good war. None of His religions is for the meek. Blessed are the meek because they cook-up so tender.

Layla and newcomer, yes, taking verses from their context is not fair. Yet, we can judge Islam by the actions of the members and reaction of the other members. If OBL is not your hero, work diligently to deliver him to the people he has wronged. If he is your hero, admit it and pick up a sword. This back and forth about "my religion is more peaceful than yours." lacks a certain sincerity in light of the barrels of blood all three religions have poured into the sands of the middle east. If blood became oil, we would never run out.

Hey, bornagain, great rant. It even had a question with it. But, it was still a rant..

OK, first tell me did someone gave you these verses or did you read each of them from Quran and in correct context ?. Each of these verses are related to a certain context and in post 9/11 era everyone seems to judge this religion by picking out specific verses. My advice is if you really want to know then get an authentic copy of Quran and/or contact your local area mosque (islamic center) and ask to speak to an Imam. Furthermore have you read any other verses from Quran.

Similar things are written in the bible too, and if you believe everything in the bible literally , you are called fundamentalist.

Same thing with Islam, if you believe the rules written 4000 years (I might wrong with years) ago, letter by letter, you may not a true believer of holy Quran.

Let's drop all the added thoughts of the person who wrote the Quran, let's drop all the limitations and misunderstanding the person had, what do you get? You get Allah, whose true nature must be endless love and compassion...

For us non-born Islams, I recommend you to read Sufi's teaching, really beautiful and moving.

He it is who has sent down to thee the Book; in it there are verses that are firm and decisive in meaning - they are the basis of the Book - and there are others that are susceptible of different interpretations. But those in whose hearts is perversity pursue such thereof as are susceptible of different interpretations, seeking to cause discord and seeking wrong interpretations of it. And none knows its right interpretation except God and those who are firmly grounded in knowledge; they say, 'We believe in it; the whole is from our Lord.' - And none take heed except those gifted with understanding -

Holy Quran

I am glad that you can cut and paste

It is sad that you can not also read

When you take a few verses out of context then you lose the meaning

When reading the Quran you should :
1. read all of it
2. have an open mind
3. look for Hadith (this will help to explain what was going on when Revelation was received
4. look for Tafsir (to see how educated people interpret what was reveled)

Go Away... Born Again Blind, maybe...

The ‘Holy’ Bible advocates the KILLING of 2/3s of ALL HUMANITY – me, just because I accept tons of scientific evidence over zero evidence of any of humanity’s “Gods.”

BIBLICAL DEATH PENALTY: KILL UNBELIEVERS - Acts 3:23 … "And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear the prophet, shall be destroyed."

BIBLICAL DEATH PENALTY: KILL UNBELIEVERS - Chronicles 15:12-13 (NIV) … They entered into a covenant to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul. All who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman.

As-Salaam-Aleikum Wa-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon you).
Allah says in Quran:
And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): "Worship Allah (Alone), and keep away from all false deities, "(Al-Qur'ân 16:36)

As mentioned in the Quran that Allah(Swt), (Supreme Lord/Ishwara/Paramatma/God) sent His Messengers(Sandeshta) in every nation for their guidance towards basic matter of Tawheed (Oneness of God), Allah, As He Describes Himself in the Holy Quran :
1. He is the God the one 2. He is self sufficient 3. He begets not, nor was He begotten 4. And there is nothing comparable to Him. (Al-Qur’an 112, Al Ikhlas).
Allah(Swt) has created whole universe and whatever in it, worship Allah alone and do not worship except Allah, the same message was delivered by all Messengers. According to Hadith more than 1,24,000 Messengers and Prophets were sent to this World among all nations. However only 28 are mentioned in the Quran, most famous are Noah, Abraham, David, Moses, Jesus and in the last Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh), all of them.
The secondary matter was Shariah (religious law) which kept changing from nation to nation and time to time. Allah, the Most High, Alone knows what is good for His creation as it is mentioned in the Quran, so Allah(Swt) revealed scrolls and books on His Prophets, few of these are The Vedas(the holy Scrolls of Hindus), The Zabur(the holy book of David), The Torah(the holy book of Moses), The Bible(the holy book of Jesus) and in the last The Quran which is the last and final scripture, was revealed on the Prophet Muhammad(Pbuh) through the Angel Gabriel. It was memorized by Muhammad(Pbuh), who then dictated it to his companions. Muhammad(Pbuh) did not know how to read and write in the whole of his life. Quran is the final disclosure of Allah(Swt) to the mankind and it confirms the completion of previous books, in this respect Islam is not a new religion but the latest version of all religions.

The Quran is not only a book as given to other prophets but words of Allah(Swt). The Quran cannot be altered like other holy books, which are not now in their original forms. Allah(Swt) has taken responsibility for the safety of Quran, so Allah(Swt) has made the Quran easy to memorize, therefore thousands of children memorize the whole Quran every year. Allah(Swt) is challenging the whole world that this Quran is free from any error and if you deny the truth then make a single sentence like that of Quran but you cannot make it, up to the end of the world.

There are so many scholars of different religions who have written books against Islam & Prophet Muhammad(Pbuh) but Islam is the only religion which does not allow insulting any Prophet or religion, besides Muslims do believe in their Prophethoods and respect their scrolls/books, because all the Prophets and their scrolls/books have been sent from Allah(Swt), because of this all the Prophets and their true followers whether belong to any religion will go in Jannah(Paradise), but after coming Prophet Muhammad(Pbuh) and Islam all the previous Prophets and their religions have been abolished, as Allah(Swt) says in Quran:

And whoever desires other than Islam as religion - never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers. [Al-Qur'an 3:85- Aal Imran].
Prophet Muhammad(Pbuh) has been sent as a Prophet towards the whole mankind, not only for Arabs and he told: I am the last Prophet and there is No Prophet after Me.

If you have a belief, act on it. Do not worry about what anyone else thinks. Your eternal life is at risk because the Devil does not want any human to be entered into heaven he wants us to be entered into Hell. He does not let anyone to do the right thing and doesn't want us to be the true
servants of God.

"Verily, those who disbelieve, it is the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them, they will not believe." [ Al - Quran Surah al
BaqarahVerses 6].

"Allah has set a seal on their hearts and on their hearings, and on their eyes there is a covering. Theirs will be a great torment." [ Al - Quran
Surah al Baqarah Verses 7].

“So travel through the land and see what was the end of those who
denied (the truth)”. [Al Quran Surah an Nahl Verses 36].

If you believe that there is only One God who should be worshipped, and no one nothing else has that right but Him, and you believe Muhammad (Pbuh), was a messenger who brought the same message as all the prophets before him, it means your heart is not sealed for Islam and now you can enter in Islam by saying these Arabic words.

Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illallaah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh.

I testify there is nothing worthy of worship except Allah, and I testify Muhammad is His servant and messenger.
