I'm trying to learn how to play golf. It seems fun so far. I have a decent drive and ok at putting but i cannot for the life of me hit with the irons. I keep topping them. They go far but i want to hit them into the air and control the spin. My frined says i need to keep my head down but i feel like it is. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Keeping your head down is a good thing. Make sure you don't have the ball too far forward in your stance, meaning have it closer to the middle between your feet. This way you will hit a little more of the ball first instead of hitting the top of it. Don't try to kill the ball, just stay nice and balanced, keep your head still and down, and pick a spot on the back of the ball to hit. You'll be making good contact in no time.

Topping usually means you are trying to hit up on the ball. With your driver that works fine, but with the irons you actually hit down on the ball, pinching it on the turf. The fact you hit the driver well and top the irons tells me you are not hitting down. Start with your wedge and learn to take a divot. Start with slow swings and make sure your hands are ahead of the ball at impact. This will promote a downhitting motion on the golf ball giving it backspin, which causes it to fly upwards.

you want to hit down into the ball compressing it off the ground, at impact your hands should actually be ahead of the clubhead, so your shaft is tilted forward, make sure your hips release fully (turn toward target), best thing i can recommend is to pick the newest issue of golf diegest, they have an entire article about this with sequenced photos of luke donalds swing, you should really take a look at it
