Are you not fed up of meeting people who can speak only a few words of English? How on Earth are these people supposed to benefit our society or economy in any way, beyond making it more secular, with different ethnic-background communities sticking together? Or do you thinkg language does not matter?
Should all immigrants have to take an English test, to make sure they can speak, write, and read english to an appropriate degree?

I'm not saying we should not allow any immigrants at all, just that they should be able to speak english before they get in.

I can see why you would say only if it worked both ways, so the english living abroad learn the language first, but that is up to the individual country, i'm just talking about here.

It should be compulsory for newcomers to learn Enlish before they can work in the country or obtain benefits. That should include wives as well. When they falsely sign a tax or benefit declaration they can't say they didn't understand the language.

I believe you are completely confusing the issue here. You refer to 'secular, ethnic backgrounds' and then you ask about whether language matters or not.

I think what you are trying to refer to is cultures or individuals that will not or do not assimilate and this can be an issue, everyone has a choice.

Having been fortunate to have lived and worked in various countries around the world I found it fascinating and challenging to be accepted into foreign working cultures. If you have never experienced being excluded from a forum, gathering or the like because you are different it can be very unsettling and upsetting. And before you jump to any conclusions I am British, caucasian and speak English fluently. On occassions that put me at a disadvantage but in these situations you learn to assimilate, its the mature thing to do.

My point here is that it does not matter where you are or what you do, you will be judged in seconds by your appearance. And if people think because you are caucasian and speak English you will satisfy all criteria and be automatically accepted how very wrong they are.

I agree with you about being able to have a functional use of English, this is of great benefit to the UK and the immigrant, its the natural thing to do. So is being able to speak Manderin in China, Hindi in India and Japanese in Japan. It works all ways. The world is ever changing, its full of opportunties for those who want it and are given a chance. Do not completely judge a book by its cover all the time!

First of all, I believe anyone should be allowed to live where they like.

But lack of knowledge of the society and its language can often inhibit their functioning, especially if they are in the minority.

If they can function however, without the knowledge of the society, its not necessary for them to know much about the society. People are just disgruntled by change, and feel they have more rights than others.

Implementing such an edict shouldnt be based upon fears, tradition and preserving the country, rather in, as I say, their practical functioning in the society.

LONG STORY SHORT - Non english speakers should learn english and its culture only if not doing so will inhibit their functioning and contribution to the society.

Anyone that is prepared to work and pay taxes is welcome as far as I'm concerned. I think it should be the individuals choice to learn English, but if we take away free translators from all the social services offered then there would be a genuine motivation to learn the language. If I move to Spain or France I do not get a free translator in hospital.

when i holiday abroad i learn the basic greetings etc; in the language of the country. i promptly forget it when i leave!
i have no doubt that if i lived there - i would pick up a great deal more conversational communication, which would encourage me to learn more.
give immigrants a chance. they are also at a disadvantage until they learn english - and can be exploited.
i would hate the world to close doors so that the english stayed in england, the italians stayed in italy etc; etc.........

If you think about it, immigrants usually take the jobs that locals don't want to do. I've seen a lot more immigrants with jobs rather than locals, so they do contribute to the economy.

i do however, agree with this: Should all immigrants have to take an English test, to make sure they can speak, write, and read english to an appropriate degree.

Only because, speaking understandable english helps ward off racist pricks.
