Truly depends on what you want it for. Personal protection I would recommend a Glock .40 caliber. Very consistent, doesn't jam often and highly accurate and reliable. I think it says a lot that MANY law enforcement agemcies use it. If you want to go true high end, go witj a Sig Sauer. Great weapon!

properly do not seek for the main inexpensive gun you will discover. do not purchase fee weapons or the Sigma. maximum good handguns will run between $500-$600 and doubtless larger. you will discover deals in classifieds. attempt backpage. lots of the same style handgun have different variations that use different calibers. What high quality do you wan't? do you like a compact style? How plenty are you prepared to spend in view which you get what you pay for? you do not probable decide for any variety of permit. I checked and you do not decide for a pistol purcahse permit. Usully thats the main person-friendly requirement in many states.

>for inexpensive target shooting - Ruger Mark II (.22 caliber)
>for personal defense - any good brand semi-auto (Ruger, Glock, S&W, Colt, Beretta, etc) 10 plus round magazine. 9mm is a good all round choice and ammo is fairly cheap and widely available
> if used for personal defense, practice with it to become very familiar and comfortable and remember, do not point it at anything you are not willing to kill

I would try to find a range or someone that has a lot of different handguns to see what you like first.

You need to speak to a professional and clarify your needs first. I would suggest that you contact someone that can help you decide. www.thegunsource.com
