I have two very small Chihuahua's. They are both about six pounds each. One loves to go for long walks and that is how him and I get a lot of exercise. The other one is timid, frail and fragile. He is healthy, he is just a bit sensative, he is very active outside, but he is afraid of the outside world, he likes his Daddy and his brother. He does not like long walks nor is he very good at them. Is it bad I walk one dog and leave the other at home? I don't want to hurt the others feelings? I want the exercise for me and the other one though.

Your dogs will be fine, Take the dog that likes the long walks out first. Judge the amount of time you usually take out & how much time the frail one wants to be walked, e.g if the fragile one only likes a 10 min walk but the other like a half hour walk take the dog out that like the long walk for 20 min, go back collect the fragile dog & walk both for the 10 mins then you have your half hour walk. I have 3 dogs, 2,,,, I walk together the other has to walked seperate, there fine I think you will not have a problem doing it this way

You mentioned that one doesn't like long walks...are short walks ok? Maybe instead of taking a long walk with one dog and leaving the other home, you could take a couple of short walks with both dogs.

You could gradually increase the length of the walks. If the timid one can walk for say, ten minutes, try that for a couple of days. Then move up to 12 minutes, then 15 minutes, etc. If you do this then maybe one day the timid one will be able to walk as long as the other.

Is there a lot of activity where you take the walks? Maybe if you find a place that's quiet the timid one won't be as afraid and will be able to walk longer. This may sound strange but I find a cemetery is a good place. I happen to live across the street from one and I like it because there usually aren't any people or cars there.

Another thing you could consider is taking them both for a long walk, but when one gets tired or frightened maybe you could carry him for a while. If you are holding him maybe he won't be as scared.

If all of that fails, and you find that it's really a problem to take the timid dog for long walks, it may be ok. I have two dogs. One I walk every day (weather permitting) while the other I only take once in a while. (That one has a liver ailment which has caused a lot of weight loss, and we're afraid to exercise her too much and cause even more weight loss.) Anyway, I'll only take the one dog for a walk when my wife is home, so she can play with and give the other one attention while we're gone. The dog that stays home seems to be ok with this. So, if you have someone that can stay with one dog while you walk the other, it might work.

Can't you take them both on a walk at the same time? That way the timid one would have a friend that he knows and can be more comfortable with? They are small dogs so walking 2 at a time shouldn't be a problem. My dogs were the same way, and I found that walking them both was a good thing. The good dog wouldn't flinch when little kids walked up to him, or other dogs, while my female shepard would go nuts! After taking a cue from him she would calm down a bit. This has helped me feel more comfortable that she will not fear-bite or attack any other dogs if they run up to her.

You won't "hurt his feelings", but even tiny dogs like Chihuahua's need exercise. Chi's get most of their exercise by running around their house and yard but occasional short walks are a must. If your Chi has a nervous disposition, try getting up early 2-3 times a week and taking him for a quick walk while it is quiet. Drive to a quiet spot if you have to. Remember that the world is a big, scary place for a 6 pound dog!

i would excercise bth dgs, i have four and we excersice them all two at a time because two are more energetic than the others, we also cut down the amount we walk the more timid nes we have, you should try that, just srt of go around the block with the more shy ones, it won't take too long and they will get better if you keep taking them out.

Well if the other one don't like long walks and stuff I don't think it's bad. You can take him for a short walk (take him out to do his business) and take him back in the house and take the other one for a long walk. Then you have two happy dogs :)
