in the area that I live in. Have you been experiencing the same thing where you live?I know it tends to happen this time of year but the local numbers here are astounding!! PLEASE PLEASE everyone watch your kids like a hawk around water! It only takes a second! In the past 4 days here we have had drownings of a 40 year old man, 2 year old child, 19 year old boy and the near drownings of kids ages 3, 5 and 9. Everyone should take the time to make sure your kids are safe around water.

My wife and I thought very seriously about not even opening our pool this year due to the baby. I'm glad I did decide to open it as my 2 year old LOVES it and we've been working on swimming lessons, but the family and I had to sit down and discuss clear rules before we did so.

We posted reminders EVERYWHERE. There are sihns on every door, gate, etc in the pool area and in the home that basically say "please keep locked at all times" and I even taped a sad little reminder of a 2 yr old who drowned recently in their pool. I didn't do it to hurt anyone, but I needed everyone to really understand how important this is and the reminder is quite sobering.

We also put into place a sustem where there are ALWAYS 2 people outside with him when he is playing, and my wife and I are in constant communication on what we are doing and if we turn for a second we always make sure the other can watch him.

Some of this may seem a little overboard, but even with this it scares me to death sometimes.

Boy, I totally agree!!! My son almost drowned about a month ago (he just turned 4). He was helping my husband do some yard work, and the pool gate was open, as my husband was working right there. You think you're watching/paying attention, but you don't realize how easy it is to get distracted. Thank God my older daughter looked out and saw him! We learned at the hospital that someone should always watch the pool, like if you're at a pool party. Don't watch the kids (if kids start fighting over on the deck and you go to break it up, another kid could fall in and you'd miss it), watch the pool. Don't carry on a conversation, drink a drink, daydream, watch the pool! After my son's near drowning, I hope someone heeds this and thus can prevent the same thing from happening!

and teach you're kids how to swim. alot of kids are indoors playing video games and not out learning the essential things about being a kid. take them to a pool and get in the water with them teach them how to swim then watch them when you allow them to swim on their own.

Who can argue? I taught my kids to swim before they could walk, and I still watched them around water. Some folks just don't think about it I guess...

Thank you. Where I live we have had a big uprising in fatal car accidents. Everyone needs to slow down too and be careful.

Hmm, I haven't heard about those drownings. Were they in a public pool? Thanks for the warning. I'm babysitting a boy for the next week (every day), and he want's to swim in our pool. Oh well. It's probably safe, our pool's shallow.
