The point of meditation is to unlock the mind. The first step to enlightenment is learning to focus your mind. To gain control of it. The next step is to, (once you are focused) begin meditation about yorself. Try to discover WHO YOU are. Where are the nerves transmitting information to: the brain. Ok what is the intelligence behind the brain which allows us to use the input from the nerves (this stove is HOT!) and data from the area around us, and turn it into action (remove hand from stove FAST!). It is the Man Behind the Curtain and your job is to find him out. Be like toto, do not be fooled by all the smoke and mirrors of the worls around you. It is an illusion!

Meditation has several different modes. There is meditation where you are focusing your mind on a specific thing, word or mantra. There is meditation where you are trying to rid your mind of all thought and think nothing. There is also meditation where you are simply calming your body down & quieting your nervous system - to achieve a state of relaxation. These different forms of meditation can have different results and can be used to achieve different things.

Good Christian verse for sweet meditiations, Philipians4-9.
4 Rejoice in the Lord always: & again I say, Rejoice.
5 Let your moderation be known unto all mankind. The Lord is at hand.
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer & supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7 And the peace of God, who passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts & minds through Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brethren, whatsowever things are true, ... honest, ... just, ... pure, ... lovely, ... of good report; if there by any virtue & if there by any praise, think (meditate) on these things.
9 Those things, that you have both learned & received & heard & seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

After this, listen & know that God Is.

Learning to focus the mind is only a preliminary step and not the purpose of meditation.

The point is to just be in awareness and consciousness - to not think...to not use the mind.

After I mastered meditating I had many unexpected benefits, such as a greater mental concentration, a more tranquil spirit and surprisingly, an awakening psychic ability. So it is good to exercise the brain, just like it is good to exercise the muscles.
