Has anyone tried to use a DirectTV satellite dish indoors? I live in a basement apartment, and we're not allowed to have satellite dishes or antennas outdoors. Help, please?

Do you live in the US? Your landlord cannot keep you from access to satellite TV. With a few exceptions you can have a dish if he objects contact the FCC they love these kind of cases to flex their muscles

An antenna can be mounted indoors IF you can see the Southern Sky . In order for DirectTV satellite TV to work the satellite dish must have an unobstructed view of the the satellite. The exact direction to point the dish depends on your zip code and level of service you select. It will be between 101 degrees and 260 degrees.

NOW!!!!!! Now as Flapjack pointed out " Rule (47 C.F.R. Section 1.4000) has been in effect since October 1996, and it prohibits restrictions that impair the installation, maintenance or use of antennas used to receive video programming. The rule applies to video antennas including direct-to-home satellite dishes that are less than one meter (39.37") in diameter (or of any size in Alaska), TV antennas, and wireless cable antennas. The rule prohibits most restrictions that: (1) unreasonably delay or prevent installation, maintenance or use; (2) unreasonably increase the cost of installation, maintenance or use; or (3) preclude reception of an acceptable quality signal.

Effective January 22, 1999, the Commission amended the rule so that it also applies to rental property where the renter has an exclusive use area, such as a balcony or patio.
A renter is allowed to put up a satellite dish less than 1 meter in diameter.

NOW if you only rent a basement apartment and do not have an exclusive lease on the area where the dish is to be located the landlord may be able to prohibit the installation of a satellite dish.

Talk to the Landlord, they might let you put up a dish or suggest alternatives.

Directv was actually advertising an "indoor" type antenna about a year or so ago just for apartment dwellers...I was checking one out for my Sister-in-Law but then she moved...look into that.
