I've a black labrador female, around 4 months old.
How can I turn her into atleast an average guard dog?
Atleast bark at suspicious strangers. Right now she wants to just lick and smell any person she comes across.

well by nature, my friend, labradors are the friendliest dogs ever. extremely loyal too. they also have one of the strongest jaws in the canine world and the best noses. which is why they usually are used as sniffer dogs for drugs etc.
based on these facts, i wouldn't worry about her not barking at everyone who comes along, coz you bet she can sniff a bad person from a good one long before she even sees him, and if he even tries to get within five feet of you, she would have jumped him to protect you and bitten his head off with her crunching teeth. so don't worry if she doesn't have much to say about it .haha! just love her unconditionally.she's the best friend you've got and will ever have.

It is normal for a 4 month old not to bark. She will in time bark with there is a ring or knock at the door. Labs are usually very friendly and when you open the door and your guest come in the dog will more than likely lick them to death! If you want her to act more like a guard dog than that then try contacting a trainer that specializes in such training. Labs are very smart and can be taught anything. Just please never use violence to make a dog mean! And dont worry so much about them being too nice to supecious strangers. Dogs are very intuitive, labs especially, and she will protect you when she sees fit.

Dogs bark at strangers because they are afraid of them.
So basically, you are trying to turn your dog into a coward.

Just let the dog lick and smell any person she wants, she's happy.
If you want to guard/protect your house buy a home safety system.

I think you should train your dog if you really want to make it a guarddog, just like the ones made to be police dogs, to attack people, but to be frank, Labrador is not ideal for a guarddog, it is too friendly and it' s totally unaware of strangers, they may lick a thief' s hand rather than attacking him, so if you really really want a dog, try doberman, it might just scare people away even by the look of its face.

Well I also have a retrievr and a doberman,..but the situation is vise versa, my retriver is abt 3 months old.. and she is very lazy .. but then if someone knocks at the door.. she will bark for sure..but then my doberman does nt do that..but then I am sure he will learn ..and he is just 4 months old...but the I try to mak him aggressive with a piece of cloth.. give ne corner of the cloth to him and then I try to pull it back and he does not gives it ...and after some time he leavs the cloth and then try to snach it agn..this is one practice you can try.

There is a very good chance she will grow into it. She is still a pup and all about having a good time. When she is around 2 years old I bet she will start to be more territorial.
