First, prepare your onions. I suggest large yellow (Spanish or vidalia) onions for sauteeing. You should trim them and slice thinly. Set your skillet on medium-high setting and add four pats of real butter to melt. Then add the sliced onions (make sure you separate the rings). You will need to stir them to prevent them from burning. Once you have limp and slightly browned onions, you can add a dash of salt if needed, it will take several minutes depending on your stove and the amount of onions in the skillet. Never salt onions prior to them being cooked, the onion juices will run and you will end up of with tastless onions.

I think that the best absolute best way is to fill a pan with sliced mushrooms and some butter and some white wine with a dash of soy sauce. put a lid on it and leave it be at moderate heat for awhile. Add the sliced onions to the mix and continue to sautee until the mushrooms are well cooked and the onions are semi-transparent. Take the onions aside and either eat them or not. Devour the mushrooms or garnish a steak with either or both.

Medium high with a tablespoon of REAL cream butter (unsalted) and a tablespoon of the best olive oil you can afford. for carmelized, add a pinch of sugar and a dash of salt; for savory add a table spoon of wine near the end and let it evaporate.
the key is to lube the pan up well and not move the onions around TOO much. also, use a wooden spoon.

chop your onion, then sautee it in 1 tbsp. butter with a few drops of vegetable oil (helps keep the butter from browning) over low heat ,covered until mostly transparent. add salt and pepper to taste at the end.

Sauteed onions are super - much extra advantageous in case you blend in some mushrooms with them. try doing the two or the two in genuine butter, and you have very lots with. do merely not do it in case you have have been given a ldl cholesterol try springing up quickly, tho!

Use low or medium low. I'd recommend the heaviest skillet you have - cast iron is good.
I like to use olive oil for onions, they compliment each other.
