when the use of plastic shopping bug started?

My guess would be back in the 50's when plastic was a "miracle" of the future and being touted for everything from clothing to homes (remember the home of the future at Disneyland). Amazing how a product that held so much promise then is the bane of our existence today.

I think it started in the mid seventies.
