I have a long, monotonous drive home from work and often find myself fighting to keep my eyes open while driving. Ive tried energy drinks, singing out loud, slapping myself in the face, stickin my head out the window - I still feel sleepy. But, as soon as I get home and out of the car, Im not tired. I think it is more mental than physical, like my brain is telling me to go to sleep. Anyone know of a supplement, activity, etc. that can keep me awake/occupy my mind on a long drive?

If your don't want to drink coffee or tea than a supplement like Bee Pollen can help. You could also try Royal Jelly which usually also contains ginseng. If you have any risk of diabetes ask your doctor about those first.

You might also try different types of music, even something you would not normally enjoy might be just the thing to stimulate your mind. Something like this would probably be better than taking any substance because you do want to able to sleep when you get home.

You might also consider an audio CD that teaches breathing techniques for staying awake.

I think you should splash your face with water before you leave and then carry portable wipes with you and wipe your face down when you are tired. I know this might sound weird at first but it stimulates your mind and might wake you up! Also chewing on ice or having an ice cold drink can keep you up too.....try some natural approaches before you turn to drugs and face it.....driving in traffic or long drives after a long day of work suck the big conaja, yet is a part of life so make the best of it and PLEASE find a way to stay awake....more accidents are caused by people falling asleep at the wheel!

Good luck!

Ask for either Gingko Biloba herb or Guarana(usually 22% to 36% caffeine). If you are intolerant to caffeine, please choose gingko biloba. Although Guarana gives you a kick and sudden, almost immediate burst of energy, gingko biloba is a lot safer as it does not exhaust your adrenal glands. Too much caffeine from guarana or elsewhere(eg strong coffee) may exhaust our adrenals after prolonged(more than 12 weeks)usage.
Use 120mg of gingko biloba in the morning and that should keep you alert for at least 8 hours or more, depending on your system. Choose softgel capsules over tablets as they are better absorbed and delivered to your bloodstream.
Perhaps you could try using a Guarana capsule just before you start your drive. Needless to say, you should not use these just before you sleep or too late in the day. Otherwise, might affect your ability to fall alseep and get a good night's rest.
Other than the above, how about listening to jazzy, noisy or upbeat music? Or a motivational tape by a gifted, powerful and charismatic speaker(eg Norman Vincent Peale) or a lively n fiery sermon? Any which way, hope you find the right remedy. Cheers:)

I have found that most of the energy drinks have high amounts of sugar and caffeine which I think can be bad for my body.

The one I drink everyday and really like works in minutes after I drink it, lasts for hours, and does not contain all of the caffeine and sugar. It is more of a nutritional energy drink which I find is healthier. I drink one before I exercise or work out or have to work long hours.

If you are concerned about your health you may want to check it out. I found them at www.carlshealthhelp.com/energy

The most effective thing I know of is to pull-over and take a 10-20 minute nap. It's safer for you and for the others on the road.

Another thing to do is to make where you work closer to where you live, or the other way around.

in the refrigerator keep some grapefruit juice...the no sugar kind...pink

keep it there just for yourself

take the cap off

turn the bottle up and take a gulp and another gulp and another gulp

whether you like pink grapefruit juice or not

and on a long drive

if you are by yourself

talk to yourself

tell yourself your life story

begin at what appears to you as the climactic point in your life and then go bassackards

Call someone on the phone. It's illegal in some states, and it's believed to cause hazardous driving, but my belief is that talking while driving is much better than sleeping while driving, right?! :)

Try a negative ioniser. A car environment would have too many positive ions. Negative ions abound near running water like waterfalls and in many places in nature.

Also try listening to an audio book, something interesting and stimulating.

It's tough staying awake sometimes! I go through it all the time. You might want to try Ginseng. It really helped me through nursing school!
