You can do anything you want. A DJ has a greater function than just playing music. If the DJ is really worth their salt they will MC the event, i.e. introducing the bridal party and couple. They will work with the photographer in anouncing the first dance, bride's dance with dad and grooms with mom. The DJ will anounce the cutting of the cakes and toast (working with photographer so the shots are not missed) and direcitng the bouque and garter toss, calling all elibible girls and batchalors up for the tosses.
On top of these very important parts a good DJ will keep the party going. He will know when to shift the mood of the room by changing the style of the music. He will also, if he is professional scan the crowd. If the bride and groom want all metal music but 50% of the guests are in boots and cowboy hats he will know to speak with you about changing some of the music to suit your guests.
You can make your own music and ask a freind to MC but a DJ, a good one is worth the $.. Ask friends who the recommend or ask your other wedding professionals,i.e. the photographer (we always appreciate a professional DJ) the venue coordinator, the caterer.
Think about it and shop around. If budget does not allow, then it does not allow but don't do it just becasue you don't want to spend the money. They are a good investment is they know their stuff.

Not tacky at all! You get to pick all the music and not have to worry about the DJ playing an inappropriate song during your reception. Also, my grandmother paid for the DJ at my wedding. We were going to do the cd thing as well, but she asked if there was something specific that she could assist with. We asked about having a DJ and she loved the idea! We got to pick it out and she paid for it. What a thoughtful gift!

I had a Dj for my wedding ceremony and it advance into suitable in spite of the undeniable fact that it advance right into a real reception with a suited dinner and dance afterwards till a million am. Your putting is a lot different and that i do no longer think of you're able to spend the funds on a DJ. Your chum could accept as true with you, bear in mind it is your wedding ceremony and you're able to do it the type you opt for to do it. i could get a lap suited have your popular songs on it and have your uncle manage it. The song instruments the temper and entertains the visitors, the DJ performs it yet once you already know all the song you opt for, you do no longer want it, particularly in case you at the instant are not having the song on for that long. good luck with your wedding ceremony making plans!

No, I don't think it's tacky but if you do that, you NEED to assign someone the task of overseeing the music. That way, the music can fade out at the right time and fade back in. He or she can ensure the correct song is playing when it's supposed to (like for the 1st dance). And the crowd will NEED someone to make the announcements like a normal DJ would - for example, most DJs announce the wedding party and introduce the couple for the first time.

Well, to spend money for a DJ would be impractical, if you can have your own type of music being played on your wedding reception by just burning CD's. Anyways, would be to your avantage, though, because guests attention would just focused on looking at you, instead of requesting music from the DJ. It's your "Big Day", so don't get some distractions to it.

Cut costs by cutting back on alcohol, flower expenses, decorations...do NOT cut back on the DJ. The DJ is the MC for your reception...the DJ keeps the party going, maintains the flow of the reception and leads the festivities. You will regret it if you skip the DJ.

No not tacky at all :). Get someone you know with a good ear to put the songs in some kind of order and someone else with an ear and some technical sense to run the show. You can get the same results. Maybe ask someone you know who is chatty and witty and has a nice voice to do your MCing. Again way down on cost and just as good. Better because your entertainment knows you and cares about you. More intimate.

No it's not tacky. Pay a family member/friend some bucks and play the CD's....Most wedding/reception venues off you their stereo system (if they have one) for use. It saves on the cost that you can use other places. Good luck!

I've heard of many wedding receptions that have that and in no way do I think it is tacky to do that. Especially since you have someone willing to MC the music.

I don't think it's tacky. However, realize that at many weddings it is the DJ that keeps things going, acting as a master of ceremonies. If you can't afford a DJ, at least get a friend to act as MC for you.
Also, you might want something more flexible like an Ipod with play lists for slow songs, fast songs, special songs like first dance, and for things like the conga line, chicken dance, line dancing if your crowd is into that sort of thing.
