Trouble is I get terrible hangovers so to try and lessen the headaches I take soluble tablets when I get home after the pub, and maybe another one in the morning. Lately I have started getting a pain in the left side of my stomach, the morning after - I am worried that I am damaging my liver...but I find it very hard to go out and not drink as drinking gives me confidence. Would Milk Thistle be a good substitute for painkillers??

Drink a sports drink before you leave the house. Have a sports drink waiting for you when you get home. Do not deny yourself food because you're looking for a quick buzz. As for having more confidence, remember that the people you are trying to impress at a bar are there doing the same thing. Not to become psycho analytical, but if you drink to have confidence, then you are at bars to meet people. However, you are probably not a "confident" person to begin. Perhaps you're fooling yourself by trying to be confident when in reality, you're more of a reserved person. There are many people out there that appreciate quiet and reserved over the drunken derelict that professes love for everyone at the bar. Oh, and as for the stomach issue, try taking tums in the morning, the neutralization of the acids in your stomach will help with the irritation.

Get rid of the beers, and drink some GOOD WINE (Red or White), before you switch to the Vodka.
That will fix the hangovers which sound like they are coming from the Beer.
Beer has a lot of junk (preservatives, chemicals) which destroy the blood vessels in your head when the alcohol expands them.

If you are concerned about the liver, have your Doctor run a blood test called a liver-enzyeme test to get your SGOT and SGPT levels (good idea to know what your baseling readings for these levels are even if you weren't concerned, by the way.

Good luck to you.

The best way to deal with hangovers is to drink a large glass of water right before going to sleep when coming home from a bout of drinking. The worst of the hangover results from dehydration. To deal with the head ache, take a headache powder when you get up. They are basically ground up aspirin with caffeine and are very effective at beating headaches especially hangover induced headaches.

I found Alka Seltzer morning relief to work wonders. I've tried so many different options and this has been the only thing to relieve the hangover. I also drink a glass of water before going to bed that night. I also have found that when you drink a lot of different drinks instead of picking one thing and sticking to it...it can make you feel more sick the next morning.

Sounds to me like it is a digestive problems causing your pain, your digestive system is irritated from the alcohol. Your liver is actually located in your upper RIGHT abdomen, at any rate some people are more predisposed to liver complications from alcohol consumption. I would cut down, particularly the vodka and especially if there is a family history of liver problems Try to keep yourself well hydrated with non-caffeinated beverages and eat heathy.

Take Milk Thistle along with an artichoke extract daily to help keep your liver in shape. Leave the pain killers alone AND if you do need them then you should see a doctor.
