I used to live in an apartment and now I have recently moved into a older home. My dog (1 year 3 month old Golden Retriever) used to love his cage. When I get ready to leave he would just walk in there when I told him to and just lay down. Now, his cage is in the basement of the home and he HATES it. I have to practically drag him down there and force him into his cage when I am getting ready to leave. He will try and run from me, get low to the ground, and brace himself to try and not be put into his cage. Also, now every time I put in in there, he will pee. What can I do to get him acquainted to his cage being down there? I don't want him to be unhappy! PLEASE HELP!!!

My dog is only in his cage when I leave the house. Otherwise he is with me. The basement is half finished, and I think his problem is more than separation anxiety because he was fine in his cage before. The only reason his cage is in the basement now is because it's cooler down there and his cage is so large it's nice to have it out of the way.

Try spending time in the basement with him. See if there are certain parts of the basement he is frightened of. Whatever it is you should be able to condition him to get used to it over time if you take him to the basement every day with you so he gets used to it and feels safe.

You have let him watch too many Horror Movies where people get chopped up in the Basement.
But, really, he scared. It new to him and it isolates him. So, he not like this and trying to tell you best he can. Move the cage up somewhere that he can see out a window or something. I would say a back porch, but, with the heat of summer, I not think that a good idea. You may also try just putting him in the basement, but, not in the cage, leave a light on and have dry food and water.

well i can answer this in alot of ways. First off, have u ever seen the zombie movies where the guy goes into the basement and gets eaten? There's one reason, ur dog is afraid of zombie attacks. Also, Hades supposedly has a dark helmet that can make him morf with shadows, so any dog with a good mythology brush up would fear the dark. the most obvious reason is that the basement is generally a scary place. IF U REALLY DIDN'T WANT HIM 2 B SAD, PUT THE CAGE IN UR ROOM.

dogs do not like being in one space alone in another little space,(basement to cage) so if I were you I would keep you dog in a more open space such as living room or family room or even kitchen. there could also be another type of animal in the basement. maby a mouse. because dogs don't mind other animals being around but when they are in a cage and the other animal is free that could be a problem for them. or if those things are not the case them maby he could be just plain afraid of being there alone. all dogs have some type a big fear like that, my dog is afraid of being in tight spaces and he is scared of the thunder and lightning. oh and also vacumcleaners. (lol)!

First you move your Golden from a place he grew up in to a totally new environment and then you ban him to the basement. I think your asking alot of him to take in.
He doesn't know the new house yet and the basement is probably old and musty and dark and damp. I don't blame him for not wanting to go down. Golden's need the security of their owners and love being in a place they feel comfortable in.
Keep him /her up stairs and allow your Golden to get accustom to the new house and the new smells. It doesn't happen over night it may take a few months. He is probably feeling like he is being punished and dragging him into the basement is now a place that has really negative feeling for him/her. Not a good way to get your Golden used to his/her new home and expect your Golden to be happy.

Is it an unfinished basement? Does any of the rest of the family hang out there? I think what he objects to is the isolation from the part of the house that everbody lives in. Is there any way you could move his crate somewhere upstairs where he can at least smell his people?

first off if your basement is dark he is scared because he is alone and its dark so he pees because he is scared so if your basement is dark try to put some lights in if your basement is light then buy some new toys for him and put them down in the basement that should work but if it doesn't try to look online to see if there is another way

I would try putting it up on the main floor. A lot of dogs don;t seem too keen on basements. Mine hated it when there crates were moved down there when we were having decorating done.

No person or animal should ever be forced to stay in a basement. Those places are dungeons. There are many things in a basement that can make your pet sick, even being in a kennel. Bring your pet back upstairs.
