In modern terminology stress analysis is refereed to Finite Element Analysis (FEA). It is a visual display of stress distributions on a loaded surface, part or assembly. FEA results have a good correlation with experiment results. This is the simplest type of analysis.

It's what I'm doing right now. at work (besides answering a few Y!Answers on the side).

Hydraulic components have maximum pressures associated with them.. for example a hose may have a maximum burst pressure of 20,000 psi (just an example). It is up to the analyst to determine if, under any circumstances, that that hose will ever see 20,000 psi. A valve may have a holding pressure of 50,000 psi. The analyst must determine if that kind of pressure will ever be forced onto the valve, under all temperatures, all conditions of humidity, vibration, etc. etc.

Furthermore, these parameters (pressures, strains, loads) are usually de-rated. In other words, the hose may be rated for 20,000 psi, but the analyst may say the system is no-go because he calculated the hose will carry a pressure of 12,000 psi, and for safety reasons they never want to put more than 1/2 of the max. (10,000 psi) on the hose.

Engineers do stress analysis. They measure or calculate stress in materials and structures subjected to forces. These forces can be static or dynamic. It is impotant to do so to know enough about a certain material and if it can hold forces (buildings etc.).
