I have just moved to France and would like to learn French but don't really need to speak French and speak English in the life.

Can I learn French without going to a language school? or Is that necessarily to go to language school for the beginners?

My college uses a software called TeLL me More, by Auralog. It covers not only the basics, but also intermediate or advanced level. It is also a lot less repetitive. My goal was to become fluent so it was perfect for me. It has a lot of different activities: picture/word association, videos, dialogues,..., includes also grammar and conjugation. It has also more content than any other language software. Their speech recognition is great so you can have a dialogue with the computer. You can check out their website at http://www.auralog.com for a free demo and compare too. You can check out independent reviews on the web too http://www.toptenreviews.com or about.com websites.

The best way to learn a language would be through immersion, visiting these countries. Learning a language will require some time. In addition to software, you can have books which are useful as well. Audio CDs like Pimsleur for instance might help you out but you cannot get any feedback on your pronunciation so I did not like it so much

You can learn on the net - without any help - without any prior capability in the specific language. Go to Yahoo Search and type in "Learn French" (or any other one). The results will point you to many sites but look for those that will say the word/words when you select them. By picking up the vocabulary in that way, you will soon be able to follow what is said when you hear the people around you speak in French.

I must admit that French is one of the more difficult languages around. I am learning Russian and find it easy at this stage to read the language or write down the word when I hear it. I still battle to get the meanings of the words in order but I am progressing well without any outside help. The advantage of learning Russian is that each letter has only one sound except in a few special cases.

Hope this help

It is possible to learn on your own, but English is simple compared to many other languages. If the only language you know at the moment is English, it may be best to learn at least some other language at a language school. For example, the concepts of verb conjugation and cases (nominative, genitive, etc.) are hard for native English-speakers to learn without a teacher. If you find a good book, it is certainly possible.

You must have some sort of discipline and learn the grammar. It doesn't particularly matter how you achieve this, but it's got to be done. What would be useful would be to team up with some other beginner so that you may encourage each other. The main advantage of a class is that it sets goals, stimulates you to learn and introduces you to other like minded people so that you can practise together. Learning entirely on your own is a lonely business and you have to be very strong willed to do it. You can never enjoy life in France to the full without the language. Make up your mind to get on with the task of learning it!

Yes, because there's a thing called Muzzy and you can learn French that way but there's 7 payments of $28.40 a total of $198.80 plus $10.90 shipping and handling wait 4-6 weeks or a month-month and a half, or you can see how much language school costs and save up money for that or you can get a language tutor

Absolutely! Going to a language school is probably helpful, but you can definitely pick up a language just from native speakers. If you hear it all of the time, you will pronounce it better and you will start to understand what people are saying. That is something that some websites can't give you--the pronunciation.

immerse yourself in any culture where they do not speak your native language and out of sheer survival you will learn the language. I must say however, that attending some sort of schooling would make the transition a great deal easier.
