I used to read what my pasture told me to read. I started to read it when i was 16, but got upset over the role that women played at the beginning of Genesis and stopped. It wasn't until I became agnostic that I finally decided to read it all the way through. I am now an Atheist.

I read the Bible myself because there is so much more in it besides just what the pastor preaches on every Sunday morning, night, and Wednesday night. Actually a few times I have sat in the sermon and just kept reading from where the pastor started instead of listening to the sermon, just because the scripture was that good.

Who me? Yeah I do a little reading (of course I have no pastor to mislead me, so I guess I'm safe in that category).
A very high number of professed Christians really are sheep in that regard, they go whichever direction the pastor leads them.
Outwardly it may seem like that is an arrogant atheist question, but it's actually pretty valid.
Get into an argument/discussion with any old "Christian" off the street and get them to back up their dogmatic statements with scriptural citation (or even paraphrase a scripture and take the time to find it).
The results are usually pretty entertaining.

to tell you the truth, alot of christians never really picked up a bible. i am guilty of that. some people have actally read it on their own many times, but there are more people that havent even touched it in 4 years. and as far as reading what the pastor says to read, most of us read it in there on the stop and if we dont finish in church reading it then we shut the book and take it home- never to be opened again till next time church rolls around. but there are a select few that get enjoyment out of the bible- read a passage sometime, you might be one of those few.
thanks for reading

I read / study the bible myself. I also look up all passages I hear from any pastor's sermons or bible teachings and use a concordance and other resource materials when I study scripture, and turn to the Holy Spirit for discernment.

Just knowing the Bible as taught or advised by a pastor is not enough. We need to understand the will of God in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. We should read the Bible ourselves expecting the Holy Spirit to give us His revelation of the word. We should attend other studies of the word and training as directed by the Holy Spirit. It is good to allow the Holy Spirit to guide us in learning the word and in all other areas of our walk with God then we will grow spiritually in accordance with God's timetable and plans for us..

I read the Bible, regardless of what the Pastor says. Lots of good and practical wisdom (e.g. Romans 12)

I read it myself. I also use different supplemental reading materials that contain articles on specific subjects & where to find a particular subject or topic in the bible.
I am skeptical of another person guiding me through the bible & giving me their "interpretation," as I've had that happen before. Not so gullible anymore.

The scriptures below suggest that the purpose of a pastor as well as other ministry gifts in the body of Christ are to bring the person to a place of growth and maturity. I understood this to be true, so I personally read what my pastor tells me, as well as read independently on my own.
Ephes. 4:11-16 (NIV)
It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, [12] to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up [13] until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
[14] Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. [15] Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. [16] From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

Both... we read the Bible at church, I do daily devotional readings, and we have just started, as a family, reading a chapter a day from the new testament, starting with Matthew.
