Not sure about Chinese men in China. But my husband and my in-laws (we are Chinese Malaysians) are pretty good to me. He's supportive, never ever mentally, verbally nor physically abused me, cares for the kids, doesn't question me on how I spend his money, respects me and my parents, responsible and even got me a maid though I'm not working. And, I get along with my Mom-in-law, too! So what if he's not romantic...
Anyway, congratulations to you. I know it's pretty scary to start a new life, in a new place. All the best!

In Chinese culture the woman's role is as home maintainer and care-giver (to the children). This is a respected and honored role. That your "friends" would choose to relate this as being trated like a slave says very much about your choice in friends. If you feel the need to be in charge, go out into the workplace and usurp the traditional male role then you should reconsider your marriage.

One thing about love is that it not only makes us do crazy things, but it also makes us take crazy things. Like abuse. You dont deserve it. And in the end no matter how hard you try you cannot totally change a man. Get out of the relationship; there will always be someone else. Someone to encourage, love, appreciate you. Someone to treat you with respect, the way you deserve. I know its hard but NO MATTER WHAT ANY ONE TELLS YOU, Im pretty sure the best thing for you to do is leave.

Well, there are husband like that all around the world.
But consider this, most Chinese women, especially urban women, work outside of their homes, and stereotypically, modern men are suppost be afraid of his wife.
However, be aware of your mother-in-law though, many of them are more traditional than their kids. However, if they let their son marry a foreigner, they are probably very open-minded.

I think most husbands all over the world treat their wives like slaves to a certain degree, lol. Be up front and ask your boyfriend what will be expected of you and hope he is honest. Good luck

It's strange you should ask this question.
Four weeks ago you replied: "I was married to a Chinese man, he speaks Mandarin and for about two years in China with everyday lessons from him I still don't know how to speak and understand Mandarin."

It depends on whether your boyfriend comes from a traditional Chinese family. In traditional Chinese families, the wife is looked upon as property, NOT as a human being. If that's the case, you would have no say in the household and you could get in serious trouble for so much as disagreeing with your husband. Be careful. You may end up getting yourself in a terrible marriage, and once you're married it's too late -- you'll have no way of getting out.

Chinese men expect you to take care of the home and children. he will only give you certain money to maintain it. so, we have a idom about it "after married, men ahve more free time, and women never have time." it is because she does everything from sending the bill to cleaning to house as well as feeeding the children. women do it all ALONE. and men think it is enough because they give you some money to be a housewife.
i think you better talk about it and see how it works. so, you don't have to fight over it.
good luck.

Chinese husbands will not treat Chinese wives as slaves but they will likely treat foreign wives as maids, since Chinese people consider all foreign races as 'alien' and 'barbarians'. It's in our culture to despise all dark-skinned races. The poorest people in the world have dark skin.
