This was an old habit from when all dogs were wild. They would walk in a circle to flatten down the grass or a comfy spot to lie down.

Its because the dogs ancestors lived in the wild and they walked in circles to pat the leaves and make it comfortable and the dogs have it as a instinct since their family from long ago did it.

It is funny that we all kind of laugh about this, but here's something to think about: a dog would likely never accidently lie down on its glasses and break them. I am amazed at how many people I know who have done this, or something similar. Maybe we should all walk around in circles before we sit or lie down. :-)

In the past, when dogs live wild in the forest, they make circles in the ground to make sure that it is flat enough to sleep on the soil, so even they are made pets now, they still have the habit of doing that.

Someone once told me that it goes back to the days when they lived out in the wild. They would walk around in circles to tamp down the tall grass or to smooth out the area and make it more comfy.
