It is a FREE phone number. It was introduced by Mercury Tele. when BT introduced theor 0800 Free number.
Although it is FREE - beware when using Mobiles etc. as a charge will apply.
The 0500 is still being used - but there are some companies who acually receive a payment when it uses the 0500 service. Some quite large reputable companies use this ply to make money. On your phone bill it will appear as a "service charge". It probably is only 10p. or 15p. BUT when you consider some companies receive 500 calls a day, it is a nice litlte earner.
The same goes for 0870 and 0871 numbers. The Co. receive up to 25p. a call (depending on length of your call). In the end it is YOU who pays. BE WARNED - BEWARE.

When your customer phones your 0500 number his call is automatically (and instantly) redirected to whichever phone number you have given us. You can change this ‘destination’ number as often as you want, for free. So even if you move office or you simply want the calls redirected to another phone for a short period, your 0500 number stays the same

It's a freephone number, introduced by Mercury in the 90's to compete against BT's 0800 service.

Now all service providers use 0800 or 0808.
