When I run regular unleaded, I don't know if it's just me or what--but it seems like the car can chug a little bit. But when I put the premium fuel in it, it runs like a champ. Is there a certain fuel that works better for a Mustang? Specifics would be MUCH appreciated in regard to why.

The premium will burn a little more efficiently but there should not be a significant seat of the pants difference. To answer your question in short, your 02 V6 mustang will run just fine on 87.

Without going into a 6 page paper about it, the "87" is a ratio of octane to heptane in the fuel. "91 octane" has more octane in it which makes it more resistant to predetonation.

There are variables (ie atmospheric pressure, timing, etc) but if you had a car with 10.5:1 compression and put 87 octane in it, the fuel would combust before the piston got to the top where the spark plug would normally fire to ignite the fuel/air mixture. So the fuel combusts which wants to force the piston back down but it still has to travel all the way to the top. This is usually called "pinging" or "knocking."
If you run the same car on 91 octane (more resistant to combustion under pressure) the fuel will hold up to the compression, the piston will travel to the top compressing the air/fuel mixture and the plug will fire sending the piston back down.

In short, your car does not have high enough compression to make the 87 octane predetonate so it is not an issue. You might notice that the 03 and 04 cobras run on 91, this is because the boost from the supercharger raises the compression. Hope that helps a little bit

You should have no problems running 87 oct . If you havent done a routine wrk on the car it might be affecting the driveability. Change the plugs, wires, fuel filter(big help) air filter. and toss in a can of seafoam into ur fuel tank and the other half into your oil

Your Mustang requires the 87 octane. If you are having problems, then you may want to try another brand of gasoline first. You may have other problems with the fuel injectors, like dirt. good luck
