I think it's a pretty good idea to have them there. That way they'll know exactly what they have to do. (ie. when to seat the mothers, do they have to shut doors so the guests can't see the bride before she walks down the aisle, do they have to hand out packets of birdseed/rice as guests are leaving, how should they dismiss people after the wedding, etc etc etc.) Besides, it shows that you value them as a part of our wedding and want them to be involved.

It's not necessary, really. I have coordinated countless ceremonies and I have never felt the need for ushers to be present at rehearsal. It's kind of the "too many hands in the cookie jar" thing because the more people you involve, the more difficult it is to have a smooth and purposeful rehearsal. If you have a coordinator, it will not be a problem for them to clearly explain their duties to them on the wedding day. I might add that the usher does not usually walk the mother of the bride down the aisle unless he happens to be her son or has been requested by her to walk her down the aisle. Other people at rehearsal can stand in as an usher so that the mother of the bride can practice her entrance.

not for the actual inter-workings of the ceremony, however, if you ask them to be ushers at your wedding, they should be involved in all things "wedding party'ish".
which includes the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner.
If you only want someone to seat people at your wedding (and not be a part of the wedding otherwise), you should just hire someone to seat people and forget the ushers.

Yes they are necessary. Your mother will want to practice walking in and on what cue she walks in. Traditionally the mother goes up to the front and lights her family candle (or sand or whatever)--and she would practice her entrance.
As the usher is leading her in, he would practice his entrance as well.
If you are having multiple ushers it is not necessary to have all of them--but definitely the 2 escorting the brides mother and grooms mother.

They should be at rehearsal, that way they know where and when to seat the mothers etc.

It depends if your just having them walk people to there seat then no if you have them doing other stuff then it would be a good idea so they know whats going on and not going in blind and mess your wedding up. Congrats

I think it's the right thing to do. They are performing a service for you at the wedding.
