My interpretation of the law is that you do not have to work for a CPA firm in order to possess the required experience, AND you do have to perform appropriate functions, likely in a copmany that is audited and under a boss who has a CPA certificate.

Assuming you're starting from scratch with a High School diploma in hand, about 7 years. 4 years of college, 2 years of practical experience (at little more than minimum wage in most cases, BTW) and a year of cramming for and taking, failing, and eventually passing the exams.
