Sometimes the person may start to doubt his/her belief. In the Qur'an, Muslims are commanded not to say anything foul about another person's religion, so I don't, and I haven't heard a Muslim here or in person disrespect another religion.
As far as other religions, I'm familiar with Judaism and grew up in a Baptist household.

Usually:
Because most people firmly and devoutly believe that they are following the one and only "true" path to salvation. And they believe this, because their religion says so.
Another reason:
They are ignorant and lack the confidence to have a conversation with other people without feeling threatened by viewpoints different to their own.
The kick in the teeth:
Even if today, right this very moment, everyone kissed and made up and we all became unified within one religion, in less than a year people would be bickering over tiny differences. The bickering usually has something to do with more than one person wanting to be the "boss" of it all. Shortly thereafter, that "unified" religion would split apart into factions. These factions would then argue, blood would be spilt, and ta-da! The fighting would begin anew...

I KNOW THE ANSWER, I REALLY DO. Christians insult Cathlics because Cathlics like to molest little boys and ride around in bullet proof glass boxes. See the Pope's, all of them, always knew that a bullet proof glass box was their ticket from being sent to heaven so soon, because once all the mother's found out about it, they knew sometime or another someone was going to take a shot at them. NOW the Cathlics insult the Christian's because the Christain's can commit adultery by paying prostitutes for their services. Now both of those religions, get to wonder if they are going to burn in hell. I dont know about you but I think if I knew I was going to burn in hell, I would overlook the insults and carry on with what I liked to do based on my religion. The Mormans are kind of stand offish as to making insults to the other religions, because they are to busy amongst themselves trying to figure out how they all got the same names, "Elder". The Joviah Witness, they know they have alot to say but keep it to themselves and to everyone else living on every street in America. The biggest gualm that the Joviah Witnesses have is that the Pope has a bullet proof glass box, and they are dedicated virgins that have to ride around on bicycles trying to convince society, door to door, that it is because of all of them that they have to go to a place called Paradise and will never get to see Heaven.

Pointing out that another religion is not obeying scripture is NOT being insulting.
It is just showing them they are doing something wrong.

They know enough about it to know it is worthy of ridicule, and not worth knowing more about.
